I really want an electric fan too. Interested to see how urs turns out.

 

How much power draw does the mechanical fan leach? I wondered about pairing an electric pusher fan with the mechanical one when I had my truck, just because temps would creep while in traffic on hot summer days.

Would be nice to have an override feature to make it stay on if you are wheeling slow as well.

 

I saw a test done on YouTube a while back with an v8 engine on an engine dyno. Can’t find the link to it, but on the rig they had set up, it lost like 20-30 horsepower if I remember correctly.

I wouldn’t mind freeing up power but the main objective is more cooling capacity at idle. I may not get either one, lol but we’ll see!

Tried to order #s 1-6 and #2, #3 and #4 are discontinued, according to my dealer.

 

Interesting considering this is a pretty new tsb. I'm sure you could buy the whole kit but that's expensive.

 

Have you checked ebay? When i was looking for a block heater for the truck, my dealer said they were discontinued. I found a dealership in wisconsin selling them on ebay and picked one up.

 

I was surprised to learn that some of the grommets are discontinued since like you said this TSB is fairly recent. I just took what they had for now.

I did check eBay no luck. I’ll keep an eye out for the other pieces. Maybe I can snatch them up later.

 

So I spent most of the day in the garage working on the new shroud. First half of the day was screwing around with my TIG welder trying to learn to weld aluminum. I practiced quite a bit and made a few good beads. But the high frequency start isn't working AT ALL on this AHP TIG. Its a pain in the ass to scratch start so I finally gave up on welding the shroud and just used nuts and bolts.

Despite there not being any pretty welds to drool over, I think the shroud came out looking super sharp. Pic dump incoming...

The shroud fits up to the 4Runner/FJ radiator perfectly. Two tabs at the top bolt to the top two mounting holes in the radiator. Two tabs at the bottom slip into the little holders at the bottom of the radiator. The dimensions are 25.50"w x 24.25"h x 1.50"d. I wanted to make it 2.00" deep, but the stores around here were out of stock, so I went with 1.50". All the bolts and nuts are stainless.

One thing I forgot to order is bypass flaps to help cooling at highway speeds. Looks like I have room for a few of them. Not sure how many I should add. I've seen some shrouds with just a couple and some with 8 of them.

Tomorrow I'll get it wired up.

 

Made a slit along some vacuum hose and made a gasket for the top and bottom.



Experimented with a gasket on the sides too, but the shroud is such a close fit along the sides, that I couldn’t get it on with the rubber on the sides. Being that it’s such a flush fit in the sides, I don’t think a gasket would make a difference anyway. If I made the shroud again, I’d make it 0.25” slimmer in width to account for some vacuum hose in the sides too.

Gosh damn that's sexy!!! Dont forget to put a couple washers on the water pump studs or the bolts will bottom out without tightening the pulley.

Thanks, John. I had hoped to replicate some of your work with pretty welds, but i think it came out really nice.

I did add a couple washers on each stud of the pump. That was the first thing I did.

I don’t think so. The process took way too long. Aluminum shavings all over the place.

The materials cost is pretty high, too. All aluminum stock, all stainless hardware.

Taking into consideration what I value my time at and the cost of materials, I’d value this shroud at around $900. I’d never buy a $900 radiator shroud. Especially one that’s put together with nuts and bolts,

Did you do any mods to your scooby yet?

 

Nah keeping them to a minimum. I have the 100k warranty so i am keeping it stock-ish. All i have done is added weathertechs (from day one), an AOS, rally armor mud flaps, and a perrin license plate relocate for that damn front plate we have to run here. I also swapped the chrome badges for matte black, and had the car ceramic coated.

Depending on what happens for MY2020, i may trade her in for the new model if they bring a hatch to the lineup. She hit 10 months on Aug 14, and i am already over 16k. I still get a big smile on my face when i open her up. Miss the supercharger whine, but that turbo whistle is just as intoxicating.
