Core Support is Tearing Itself Apart

    While doing a service on the truck today, I noticed some very concerning stress cracks on the core support. One of which has torn clean through!

    At this point, I am trying to look into my options to correct the issue. My initial thought was to stitch weld the support together. This is the easiest and likely the cheapest option, but also the most redneck way you could do it. If it was just cracks, I would probably consider it, but being the support is cracked fully through, I am leaning more towards wanting to replace the entire unit.

    After further investigation, it looks like one of the radiator support bushings is GONE! I feel like the support bushing came loose, fell out, and put additional stress on the radiator support itself. This is why the crack is so pronounced on one side, and not the other.

    Has anyone had experience with replacing a core support? It looks like there are some spot welds holding everything together but they do sell replacement support assemblies which makes me believe it can be done. Any advice is appreciated.

    That's what you noticed?

    Thats where the grill and headlight meet. There are four holes. Two are for bolts and the other two look to be those plastic snaps that always break so I replaced with some zip ties.

    I had the Energy Bushings already in there. Looks like one just came loose. Did you replace the entire radiator support for the final fix?

    Nope. Just cut the ends of the replacement off and used about a foot of each end of it so I wouldn't have to get involved with the spot welds across the top of the radiator. The hood prop hole was a bit of a pain, but other than that it lines up pretty well and nests on top of the broken one just fine.

    Yeah, I’m not planning on running it this way. Going to get a new support bushing coming today and probably order an aftermarket core support.

    Weld it up (not spot weld) and then weld on a a steel support brace.

    The metal on our trucks is so thin that welding can be extremely difficult. You burn through way to easy. I’d have to weld to piece of filler plate. This will probably be the temporary fix until I have the time/fun’s to do it the right way.
