OMFG! Can't see the grill or front axle, but that is the exact same truck, colour, gen. that's an 85? Then that is quite likely my old truck.

Bought it at an auction in Brantford back in 94 for $900. It was a lil rough when I bought it. Tailgate was shot, no glass...thought, shit I can find one of them (this is when I met Shane). Driver Side rear window in the Fiberglass cap was shattered, which I thought would be a nightmare to find one (it wasn't). Ended up shipping a tailgate from California (early internet was tremendous...1994)

Still have the VIN? This would be real cool story lol

Ahh, just checked a pic of the ownership, listed as an '87. I shoulda remembered wasnt an '85, wasnt a factory solid axle truck.

Intend to stick around. Thanks for the warm receptions.

Red one is an '86. Needs full brake job including lines front to rear, tires are partly rotten, fuel system refurb and interior partly reassembled to pass a safety. Hope to have it road worthy for next spring, pending finances. Figure I need $2-3k to get on the road. Easily $1k worth of tires, and another in brakes all around. Excited to say the least.

Hey Steve, saw you had posted up the other day, thanks for the welcome.
Looks like you left the Ardbeg trip before a little trail rash incident.

Thanks Norilsk. I saw that '93 on kijiji before you grabbed it (ad might still be active even) and tried to convince my neighbour to get it. Glad his wife said no, too much rust for a truck he'd intend to DD. I've had 4 previous 22re 5-spd trucks, love that motor. 3 4runners and an Extra cab truck all outweigh your new ride, that thing will be tons of fun.

There is definitely some pros and cons to each setup. Personally I hate having a cap. It cripples the entire point of a truck to be honest. The flatbed is sweet. The ability to load a skid into the bed and not have to worry is awesome.

Money aside I would do it again. However I would go with a cap option that is easily removable like the one chandlerdoom offers. Flatbeds are just so versatile. Bedsides in the way? Remove em. Tailgate in the way? Remove em. Just so easy. The aluminum potion is beef, don’t have to worry about rusting or paint. For the trail, I’m not much wider (tires are still the widest point). Part that screws me up is the length (insert that’s what she said joke...). My approach angle has always been bad. But I have gained some height. It’s not entirely enough. But it is there. Also for gear, the ability to anchor stuff down and still have access to it is awesome. I don’t have to remove ten things to get to one.

Thanks, yeah I couldn’t decide on the cap, but glad I didn’t go that way.
I need to decide if i want to do rtt or some kind of sleeping thing.
I see a flatbed in my future. Next thing to buy is going to be a mig/tig welder, can’t beat aluminum for weight and strength. Just price sucks of aluminum and needing a new welder

Why not get a spool gun for your welder?

Yeah even to buy aluminum it is pricey. Spent close to $200 on a few small pieces of 3/16 and 1/8th.

Maybe, I’ve been looking at upgrading my welder anyway.
Yeah that’s the only downfall of aluminum

I’m thinking, flat bed out of steel, steel frame anyway. Aluminum deck

Then cut all the stuff for the canopy and get someone else to weld

Yeah. That’s the only problem with making stuff. So many options.

One of my welders is a multi processor that can mig, tig and stick. Works well. Problem is consumables and torches and what not are expensive. Lol got to love the prices of consumables.
