Any chances that us 2018 OR owners will be able to get a software update to include the Carplay?

Not sure what the fuss is about apple car play and android auto. I have both in my civic and cant stand either. I use regular bluetooth 100% of the time.

.... I was referring to the fact that many people feel not having it is detrimental. That 2018 vehicles shouldn't be without it. I wonder how many of those people have actually used it.

My guess is that it would require different hardware or something. I doubt it’s as easy as just a software update.

Lol. So apple users can be frustrated by lack of connectivity too ?

To answer your question, I don't see them changing their system. No reason to.

This question gets asked yearly, “maybe we can get an update to run it?” Not happening. 2019 Tacoma will not even have Entune 3.0 ..

I've thought about going to Android auto for better gps support. But we will see.

I got rid of my stock head unit and got a Pioneer AVH W4400NEX which has the capability for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I use Android Auto every single day. The only thing I dont like is that the wireless option is only available for the Google Pixl phone and it doesnt look like there is an update for other Android phones in the near future. Not that big of a deal, really, but I love the ability to play my Pandora and use Google maps. I use it every time I get into my truck.

Sweet. I've got a pixel. Haha. Would be a great phone if it wasn't so buggy.

Can you mirror your phone onto the unit? I have a ham radio app with live telemetry on a map I'd like to integrate into the head unit system at some point

Yes. I downloaded an app called Miracast and it will put anything from my phone screen onto the head unit. I went into my netflix and had Avengers playing in the truck the other day... pretty sweet!

Wouldn't it be cheapest just to buy a tablet and tether your phones connection to the tablet? You could then do everything on the $200 tablet as opposed to buying a new head unit.

considering that my head unit was twice the amount of your said tablet price. Its worth way more for not having the hassle of setting up and tearing down a table, plus a phone tether every time i get in and out of the truck.

Now I just get int he truck, place my phone in the holder on my dash, connect the cable, start the truck and everything is conveniently placed and controlled on the 7" display of my head unit.

Also, I dont know where you got a good $200 tablet. Last time I checked, they were all about the same price as my head unit.

Yes. I plug the phone in, start the truck and then android auto starts up. If I go into reverse, the backup camera still pops up and gives me video feed and I am pretty sure you can feed another video source into the head unit as well. The Pioneer w4400nex is a fantastic head unit. There is even a button to pull up video feed from your back up camera any time you are not actually in reverse.

Its worth checking out. The stock units these trucks come with sucks. I never stick with stock radio units... EVER

as have been stated before (I think by Toyota) you cannot retro fit the new head units to replace older head units. its a combo of software and hardware that doesn't exist in the old head units and compatibility with the various ecu's in the vehicle.

Forget ApplePlay and Android Auto - there is a new player in town that will be able to mirror your apps on the screen with full interface - it's called WebLink and a lot of 3rd party audio manufacturers are putting it in their systems plus a lot of app creators are including it in their apps! Imagine Waze on your display that you can control from the audio unit? https://www.abaltatech.com/

Here's some of the apps available on the JVC/Kenwood systems: you can even have Dash Command on your audio display!

    http://www3.jvckenwood.com/english/car/applink/

Maybe Toyota will bypass ApplePlay and Android Auto and go full WebLink!
