Volvo dealer tried to pull that crap twice on my wife and I with a used car. Told them what we wanted to pay. Manager said “I’ve got the car for you, right in that price range.” It was fresh off the truck from auction, so they needed a day or two to inspect and process into inventory. Came back to talk numbers, and the price had suddenly gone up $8,000.

    We got up and left.

A few days later, we saw another one at a sister dealership. Wife called and asked about it, and they said they could do it for our price. They brought it to our dealership for us. Went in the next day and they jacked it up $3,000. We called the manager over and told him that it was an insult to have that done to us not only once, but twice, and there wouldn’t be a third opportunity.

    We got our number.

It’s very common for dealers not to negotiate on limited productions vehicles. It’s also common for dealers to add a “market adjustment” to limited production, popular vehicles. Personally I think you would have to me nuts to pay a market adjustment or even pay msrp for that matter. As soon as you drive off the lot that premium is worthless.

There is always a dealer out there that won’t mark it up and maybe even let it go under msrp. It’s your job to find it and let some other idiot pay msrp and a market adjustment.

"Told them what we wanted to pay"

Biggest mistake you can ever make when buying a car. Never ever tell them what you are willing to pay or you'll pay that and more. You've just given up most if not all of your leverage in your negotiation.

No. It was WELL below (actually, a stupid amount below) the sticker on anything we were looking at. We had complete leverage.

And we didn’t give them a “monthly payment”. We gave them a dollar amount. I have a calculator. I know how much it would work out to be per month.

My local dealership here in magical Montana gets an occasional Pro on the lot, and sells it quickly for MSRP. The salesmen there actually try to talk people out of buying them and urge them toward a TRD OR. They discount those a little and they're better than $10K less.

If it were me, I might offer them MSRP, or walk. I have never been willing to pay ADP or "Market Adjustment" price for any vehicle.

I remember a time when PT Cruisers were selling for several grand over MSRP. :anonymous:

What a f**K job that dealer is trying to pull. It would be one thing if they gave you that above MSRP pricing up front right from the get-go. But trying to sneak it in once they saw how excited you were to be getting a Pro is flim-flam. That salesman's name wasn't Frenchie by any chance was it?

I think I saw a Pro in Blue at North Hills Toyota in Pittsburgh Pa this past weekend when I was visiting. Checked their website and it was selling below MSRP. So shop around and travel.

Yea that’s what I figured guys just wanted to make sure. I’m showing the paper work to a friend who owns a high end Chevy/Cadillac dealership and see what he says. But I’m prob gonna end up giving him an ultimadem today any ways. For those asking about my first gen, well I’m sick of driving a single cab and the uncomfortable bumpy ride and some other little things. Had it for 4 years now. I think it’s funny how i told the dealer word for word to his face “ I’m 21 and I’m in no rush to screw myself over financially “ yet he goes and pulls this smh. But thank you guys for the help I will be keeping you updated with what happens

Your actions speak louder than your words. For most 21 year olds, buying a $45k vehicle IS screwing yourself financially. He's still got you on the hook and he knows it.

That being said, do what you feel is best and deal with the fallout. You'll learn a valuable lesson in responsibility. That's worth something.
