I look at it as a really fancy charge idiot light. Remember the older cars, and how that light would illuminate if you turned the key to on but didn't start the engine?

I have seen a few people do ECU updates via VM but it always makes me cringe. I would hit up a pawn shop, get a cheap Netbook for $50 or so, throw Win7 on it and use that to do my ECU flashes if I didn't have access to a Windows laptop. If nothing else, it gives cheap piece of mind when doing something like ECU flashes.

It seems odd but they are bricked very easily. While I have never flashed a Toyota controller, I work for a large domestic automotive company and I have personally bricked several controllers in the laboratory. They will lock up, not reset or not allow access to the read/write data. It typically happens here when flashing cal data and accidentally using the communications protocol for a different model ECU. Once they lock up, it has to be replaced with a new unit.

ECU is on the dock for UPS to take.
On a side note I took some photos in the process of removing the ECU in case there isn't a write-up yet. I'll get those up in a different post someday.

I’ve heard to reinstate a bricked ECU, one must open the case and short one wire to bring it back to bios boot mode. I never done it but maybe someone could chime in and confirm or correct.

This is good advice. I was trying to install a map to my MSD ignition on my SxS running a VM and it would fail/brick the MSD. Finally just used a real laptop, no issues pushing any updates to it. All the ECU's I've flashed were always done on a laptop, no VM's.

I ran it in a VM because I was using my work laptop and wanted to isolate the cracked Techstream from everything else incase it was more than it appeared. It's one thing to brick an ECU. It's another to be the source of getting a corporate network pwned.

Hopefully you disabled file/folder sharing as well as peripherals and/or you didn't use a thumb drive to copy it to the VM. Also, hopefully if you downloaded it to the VM from the interwebz, you disabled the NIC (and all the other things I mentioned) before installing. Just saying, there are precautions that should be considered if you really want to make sure the VM is isolated.
