No dog yet, but i'm a very prepared person. Getting a Weimaraner in the spring of 2019 and started to build it's own personal space in our yard. We really have a well developed and beautiful garden I don't want it pissing, shitting, digging up and thinking it has rein over, so this should help. It won't be a "kennel" since Weims don't take well to being apart from their owners and will likely destroy this space, dig out, jump over or what have you. So there won't be a gate separating this space from the rest of the yard but it will be where it knows to go eliminate, have a crate to rest outside and where we will do most training. Thoughts? I buried 6" x 6" timber in the ground to prevent digging under 6' fence boards. We will be putting down fake grass for easy cleanup and no maintenance plus a space for it to dig and a clear roof for easy winter time eliminations.

Even used the taco bed outlet for cutting lumber.

Our next door neighbors did similar with their dog as they were the first to build in the neighborhood. Trained her exclusively go to the bathroom in the dirt, never on the grass. Fast forward a couple years, almost all the houses are built. They now have to walk quite a ways to get her to go to the bathroom. She literally won't go unless she's on dirt.

My advice, don't put a ground texture you won't be able to find anywhere else. You'll inevitably go camping, or have someone else watch him and he won't think he's able to go. If you do, I would make sure he knows it's ok when he does go in a grass field or park while you're training. Some dogs may be more sensitive to it, but I figured I'd share what they're currently dealing with. They definitely would have done it differently.

Thanks for that! We've kept the in mind and considering how insanely similar this stuff is to real grass I'm not concerned about that, plus there will be a large section of dirt/gravel where it will learn to eliminate on both surfaces. Plus of course going for walks and learning on various surfaces along the way.

    Kinda similar

I trained both of my dogs to use the bathroom in a specific corner of the back yard

It’s furthest away from the used areas in case I don’t feel like scooping one week so the smell doesn’t overwhelm the backyard

I let that area stay “natural” with whatever grows and I just mow it regularly like the rest of the yard...it’s mostly grass and dirt with some old mulch from the previous owner

I started outlining the “approved” area with small bushes that hide the area but the dogs can easily maneuver between or even over if they so choose but haven’t finished yet as some other things took priority financially

To add, both of my dogs don’t care what surface they go on...they just know when we are home, the corner is where they go

Keeping the space "natural" is probably a great idea to keep pup less confused as possible when out and about.
This is definitely turning into a pricey project ($1000) that I hope works out the way I want it.

I also make a point to always take them out before going anywhere anyways

The mutt still has a nervous stomach so she’s gonna go when we get wherever, but the Dutchie is very good and on a solid schedule

I don’t let the Dutchie stay with anyone else and just have a trusted friend come take care of him when I have to be gone

It's looking good. I was actually worried knowing what my neighbor trained into their dog. We had 4 months consecutive snow and ice as soon as we brought our puppy home. I thought he may only be used to going on that and would struggle when that surface disappeared. While I never had any trouble potty training him I definitely praised him for going outside much longer than I normally would have. I wanted him to know it was fine to go once the snow melted. He's got no problem going exactly when I tell him now. I mention it, he takes a few steps and goes, whether in the back yard before I leave for work, or at the lake in a strange place.

Thanks! We were offered the chance to get the pup this fall, but we are hesitant about going into winter months with a new pup. Kinda for the reason you just mentioned and well, WINTER SUCKS and I cant imagine a new puppy making it easier. BUT a pup through the winter might work well, a few months of minor pup stuff indoors then its time for real dog stuff and exercise into the spring season NOT winter..... My concern now is, he will be trained to eliminate on grass, soil and gravel but NOT ice and snow.

Came by and see everyone talking about where the dogs releave them selfs.

My brother got a yorkie and lived in an apartment that allowed dogs, instead of taking it on the back side where the grass was and most everyone els took dogs( including our other brother taking a greyhound) he would walk the dog around the parking lot and side walk. Well the dog got trained or just got use to going on side walks or drive ways. Never really could break the dog if it and get it to go in the grass. Even 15 years later the dog went on the side walk and drive way 98% of the time. Very annoying when it’s poop and you step in it in the dark.

I’d say always try and get them to go as far away from where people walk as you can.
