I first used a light meter nearly always and dial in the readings from the meter. I used Lightroom 5 to bring out some detail and correct some exposure because it challenging shooting this kind of scene with the sun on one side and darkness on the other side. The Shovel Lake Fire is considered to be over 508 square kilometres 196.14 square miles and no rain in sight.

In May I bought my 1st DSLR, a Nikon d7500.
I really enjoy road trips and the occasional photo shoot with the taco..

Not sure if we’re allowed to plug our Instagram accounts but I have more of my work there.

Ive got some pics to flood into this thread soon. I caught my first lightning bolt over the weekend. Even caught it at 140mm! shot almost 12k photos over my trip. Time lapses sure do burn away at my shutter clicks. hahaha

So, I'm trying to sell the idea of a zoom lens (24-70 f2.8) to the company I work for. I currently use a 50mm 1.8 for everything (mostly video). While it works, its just not ideal.

While everybody I think is on-board, I have to write up a short document detailing why this new lens will make our job better or how it will accomplish things we couldn't do before.

I need to sell this to people who are n00bs with a camera.

Anybody have some really basic input here? I'm just trying to get this idea across in a super simple, yet effective way.

More creative control, better range for a wider variety of shots? What do you think would convince them, what do they want from you in terms of your work? The quality on all of the 24-70 f2.8s is phenomenal but that won't really tell them what THEY want to hear. Maybe say you can get a better/different shot(s) with less space? Dunno..

What kind of video/photography is it? Product shots? People shots?

24-70 is really a great range. You get:

24mm, the quintessential video focal length, what most people use for vlogging, and things like capturing several people in an environment together (both inside and outside).

35mm, the quintessential environment portrait focal length. Captures an individual or individuals with the environment around them.

50mm, the common first all around lens, great at capturing everything but can end up making all your photos look the same and a little basic or flat.

70mm, slight telephoto, gets more compression and is close to 85mm which is one of the typical professional portrait looks.

50-70mm, great for capturing different b rolls for video.

In general, 24-70 let's you carry one lens and capture unique and varied view points on your shots. For video it will let you get the scenimatic wide shots and mix with more telephoto b roll to make your videos much more professional and aesthetically engaging.

And the 2.8 will give you some sick nasty bokehs at the same time.

Dunno how I've missed this thread...

Been working on as a commercial photog for several years...first few were freelance with an agency and the last few have been in-house for a major clothing label (still freelance on the side but not nearly as much as I used to).

My full-time gig is all Canon gear and a medium format Hassy (digital), Profoto lights and all kinds of modifiers. We have a photo studio with a 40ft wide cove that I work out of.

At home, I shoot Nikon (always fun going back and forth between the two). D800 and some Paul C. Buff lighting equipment. Usually I just borrow stuff from the studio though if I get a freelance job.

Regrettably, I haven't shot any film since I was in school several years ago but shot tons of it back then. I miss the darkroom but I couldn't imagine having to go through that process for commercial jobs...much respect for the old school guys that did.

Good stuff dudes. Some nice points there.

It's for a variety of marketing work. I'm pretty fresh here, but the vid dept. has been lacking big time so I'd like to spruce it up a bit and up the quality a bit.

I know why a 24-70 is great, its just hard to convey that to somebody in a non-creative way.

Can you rent one for a job and show them? Even just a demo of some of your common shots taken with 50 vs wide can be compelling.

Alternatively you could find some YouTube videos, there are a lot of good creators out there with some great video that use varied focal lengths.

24-70mm f/2.8 is the single most lens I use...have access to a bunch but that lens is on my camera 95% of the time if not more. Extremely versatile and fast enough to do most of what you need it to do, only time I ever really take it off is if I need even shallower depth of field for a specific creative look in which case I'll put on a fixed 50 or 85mm with a f/1.4 or 1.8

Yeah actually in the past before I was working with them full time, I had them rent glass because I just couldn't do it with the lens they were using. I talked them into just picking up a native Sony 50mm so that the A7Sii's autofocus system would at least work for me. I'm looking at the G Master 24-70 which isn't the cheapest thing on the market but the quality is outstanding. So that's why they want a bit of a sell before investing in a nice chunk of glass like that.

I think I've already won the battle, I just want to hit them with some good facts and knowledge so they have no choice but to say yes.

That 24-70 g master is pure sex. Alternatively you could probably get away with the 24-105 f/4, more telephoto, and f/4 is not terrible. Also a wicked lens, and lighter/cheaper.

But man that g master is great.

Lightroom and Photoshop. Lightroom for processing and batch editing, Photoshop for actual retouching. Nothing beats either of those programs (except Capture One which some people prefer over Lightroom). LR is far more user friendly though.

I'll give you an alternative if money is a challenge. The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is an amazing lens. Just came out recently for sony emount and is only like 900 or so.

Absolutely awesome video lens, you lose the 24 for 28 which is definitely noticeable if you like 24, and bokeh isn't quite as smooth as g master (not huge issue for video), otherwise worth the value in every way.

I use capture one, it's incredibly powerful but agree the learning curve is much steeper.

I don't believe in photoshop. For drawing penises on my photos I use paint.
