    This, exactly this!

I want to keep up with traffic without having to push further and further every gear change. Also without it holding on to gears forever... Can you also give it another 200lb/ft of torque as it stands? :p

This is @Chipi3s time to chime in with something about Turbos for that 200lb/ft! lol

yup - turbos (or a whole different engine) - i am guessing there is only so much an ECU can do when a hamster wheel is powering a truck

If that is how the Tacoma went into sport mode that would be OK. But it does not just downshift one gear, it goes to S4 every time no matter what gear you are coming from in D.

Thanks for the reply; especially with regard to lift and tires. I *personally* don't expect to be able to tow in 5/6. I believe Toyota is very clear these are both over drive gears and not meant for towing.

Side question..,How did you get a 3” lift with a 3rd gen? All OME lifts for the 3rd gens are 2” unless you stack the lift with spacers.

Technically it was 2-7/8" front, 2.75 rear. I added 3/8 spacers on front with the 888 coils. I have measurements to back it..I did the Dakar full meduim duty leaf pack with 4* shims. Rides like a cloud...

I did...it worked. I didnt use 6th, strictly 5th. It pulled the bug and trailer fine at 64mph. And no tune. Strictly what the Toyota update flash. I am planning to do the tune as soon as funds are available, but monitor this thread very closely.

The Toyota tune is VERY dependent on how you drive it. You will have good acceleration and shifting if you drive it like a red headed step child. If you drive it conservatively it will hesitate to shift. I babied the truck too much when I bought it and after the flash I beat on it. That was how it worked out for me.

Everyone is going to have different symptoms with this dumb system.

My main problem: I do notice mine will go up hills and only shift down to 5th then swap back to 6th and continue just fine after the RPMs spin up a little bit. Torque converter problem? I’ve had other vehicles with less power that didn’t shift like a 16 yr old with Tourette’s. Sometimes it’ll downshift into 4th and WILL NOT accelerate the 1-2 MPH higher that would get it to drop into the next gear. This happens in 5th too on the highway at times which requires me to speed up manually for it to shift right.

    In regards to towing,

    Page 180
    https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM04005U/pdf/OM04005U.pdf

    ● Vehicles with an automatic transmission: To maintain engine brak- ing efficiency and charging system performance when using engine braking, do not use the transmission in D. If in the S mode, the transmission shift range position must be in 5 or lower.
    ● Vehicles with a manual transmission: To maintain engine braking efficiency and charging system performance when using engine braking, do not use the fifth gear (5-speed manual transmission) or the sixth gear (6-speed manual transmission).

It’s been done. A search here or in the MT thread should yield you some answers.

A sincere thank you for the correction. Is it obvious that it has been too long since I read the manual?

I suspect my memory was affected by the fact that I pull a relatively heavy, tall trailer, on hills. As a result my truck really won't pull that load in fifth. On most days I'd be shifting every 2 minutes!

Thanks again - accuracy IS important. :fistbump:

The manuals have 4:3's. As far as I know all automatic are 3:9x.
