there aren't going to be any Diesel Tacomas in the USA because nobody really wants or really needs one, and Toyota wont go thru the trouble and expense of retooling their factories to produce one for a tiny percentile of people who really would buy one

Then that tiny percentage would make up the majority of the complaints on here.

yes that percentile still has the Peter Pan dream and believing every false rumor that has presented itself for the last 20 years, there is really no actual benefit to having a mid size diesel truck in America, plus u can tag on another $10000 to the price of it, plus extra maintainence, plus Enviromental/air quality issues, plus the higher cost and lack of availability for diesel fuel make it Unicorn that will never materialize.

Just curious, why is there no benefit to a mid size diesel in the US but there is in other countries? Is it the price of diesel? I don't really believe the availability argument, since every gas station i visit has at least 1 diesel pump, and that diesel powers 90% or more of the transportation industry all over the country

Other countries tax diesel differently. I believe they get tax incentives to get diesel over gas. Its been cheaper in Europe (I believe) over the years. Insurance is different etc etc

cause mid size trucks in the USA are grocery getters/weekend warriors not used for 3rd World work horses and they don't have Clean air regulations like we have in this country

Care to back this up with more than empty statements? My last 2 trucks were diesels so I am all ears.

Depends, do you mean to ask which country has more red light cameras, or which country has a larger percentage of citizen with a higher education?

Same with s.e.a the tax scheme is what holds diesel back in North America. It's a pain because i would love and could use a diesel Tacoma. Would suit me perfectly. Thank government and big business for controlling the supply and demand

I’ll start with the Ford 6.0L powerstroke where I saw colleagues spend enough in repairs to buy a new truck. The 7.3L not far behind.

There’s nothing that I’ve ever witnesssd that indicates passenger vehicle diesels are a lower cost of ownership than a gas vehicle.

Here’s another example, take a car VW Diesel vs a Prius (90% gas car).

The longest lasting vehicle with the lowest cost of ownership the last 20 years nearly every year is a gas powered Toyota Corolla car.

In the case of the Tacoma I believe it would require extensive modifications to add a Diesel Engine which would add a substantial price increase to an already expensive truck.

    Troll much?

Last truck had lived its full life expectancy. Tired of trying to park a full sized truck and I no longer need a big Cummins to tow with. I work 7 minutes from home so a diesel never gets to full operating temp.

Needs changed so my truck changed. Why pay for a 3/4t diesel when I don’t need one? Eco-diesels were having sketchy reliability reports and I didn’t like the pricing and package I had to take just to get the eco-diesel motor. Dodge basically gave me lots of reasons to shop around and the Tacoma wasn’t that far off of what I would be paying for an E-D.

I bought what suited my new needs. Would have bought another diesel if one fit my lifestyle and needs at a decent price. Your ears satisfied?

Any reason you chose a Tacoma over say another mopar, like a Dakota or a jeep even?

The Fords were notoriously horrible. Anyone who knew diesels knew they were a massive lemon. I have heard story after story of people paying equal and many times more than their monthly payments in repairs. So to include such a piece of shit in an assessment of diesels is skewing the arguement and stacking the deck against them.

Did I ever buy a diesel based on lower cost of ownership? Yes and no. Towing with a big gasser engine vs diesel is no comparison. The gasser would bankrupt me. But driving a diesel for groceries is like bringing a RPG to a schoolyard fight. Total overkill and not a cheap mode of transportation. So your use of a diesel will dictate its expense or cost savings. With the NEW gasser economy and fuel saving technologies the gap has closed dramatically. My Ram with the 5.9 Cummins was reliable, long lasting and a great truck for my needs at the time. As my heavy towing had diminished dramatically if I was still looking for a full sized it would likely be a gas motor. If I were still towing heavy it would still be a Cummins.

To bring up a Corolla is laughable. If I didn’t need a truck then a Corolla (or a Prius) could be part of the discussion. Might as well start adding mopeds into the discussion even though I can’t pull a trailer or carry anything home from Home Depot with one.

So my diesel experiences are favourable. I picked a reliable proven engine. I used it hard enough to justify the big engine over comparable gas motors. At 380,000km I only ever worked on the truck and never the engine or power train. If you had a Ford engine then your experience will be completely different.

I liked the Tacoma, dakotas are discontinued the last I checked and a Jeep won’t tow my trailers.

Understood I was referring to cost of ownership for cars and mid size trucks for diesel vs gas.
