Lol the 6.0 sucked but I'd like to know where you heard the 7.3 being unreliable. That was the first (and last) reliable power stroke. They phased it out because they couldn't meet emmisions standards (go figure). I've known people who have put a half million miles on the 7.3 with no powertrain problems at all.

Had an 06 Dakota. Nice but not Toyota nice, and certainly not as reliable.

My dad's had 2 jeeps, a 93 and an 03. Terrible gas mileage, and rougher than a cob riding around.

As Exracer stated, the 6.0 powerstrokes were a disaster as were the 6.4s. These engines were in large part hamstrung by wonky emissions systems. You can buy a low mileage 6.0 and easily bulletproof it by addressing the two Achilles heels of that engine. If you live in a state with lax emissions testing, you can turn it into a pretty good little oil burner.

As for the 7.3: it was a heck of a motor. Hell, 1999-2001 low mileage 7.3s are regularly fetching 30k.

When it comes to long term durability, a good diesel cannot be beat. My Cummins gets equal and sometimes better mileage than our Tacoma and 4Runner. It’s also more comfortable and retains its value as well over time.

Now the cost of ownership is misleading. Since 2007, the costs have gone up due to the emissions systems. They have added complexity, cost, added maintenance, and lowered the economy of diesels. At some point, as the egrs are eliminated in the near future and scr treatment strategies become more efficient and simpler, these costs will go down.

However, they are larger motors. Think three gallon plus oil changes, multiple fuel filters, etc. Properly maintained, they tow better and last longer than their gasser counterparts.

so in reality the real market for diesel engine trucks are Full sized trucks and the only reason for having a full sized Diesel is supposedly to tow heavier loads than a comparable gas truck, that seems to be a small market for sales unless everyone in this country uses their trucks to haul trailors loaded down with stuff everywhere they drive. in reality Toyota probably will sell more gas powered trucks in a month than all the Diesel powered trucks the Big Three will sell combined in a month. no normal Joe will ever need or pay for a full sized diesel truck, and theres zero need for Toyota to put a diesel in the Tacoma since they sell the gas powered tacomas quicker than they can make them.

Hell IDK, haha it just gets further and further out each time it’s brought up haha. Last time I spoke with a Toyota corporate dude, he claimed that it will not be this year or 2020 but that Toyota is next on the list in line to have a Diesel engine in the US. I’ll believe it when I see it
