So, back to my original question. What is the R&D truck set up? 285s? 4.88? Bone stock? Could have swore I read something at some point that he was on 285s but I may be mistaken

THIS!!! I would love to see what gear I'm in while in "D" mode!!

Also, light driving definitely throws the truck in 6th with RPM under at around 1000 rpm or less which can get annoying with any sort of wind or slight hill.

It definitely shifts too fast in gears 1-3.

Cleaning up the TC would probably be a nice too. I don't have the TSB, but the 1.04 still leaves me with the occasional phantom bump when in stop-n-go traffic. It's light, but still annoying (it was a lot worse in 1.03).

The shift points are still a little wonky for me, it's as if they keep changing. Some days the truck shifts perfectly at the perfect rpm all the time and some days it shifts kind of firmly and it will get stuck in a gear after I accelerate up to speed. I almost have to let off the gas pedal 100% for it to shift to a higher gear even though it's cruising at 3k rpm at 55-60 mph

The biggest issue for me with 1.04 is 3rd gear hanging from 25 to 32 with light throttle. Part of my commute is a steady flat 30mph and to get it to shift up I have to accelerate to 35 and then come back down to 30, where it will then sit nicely.

Beyond that, now that I've had the tune for a few months, the surging above 4,000 RPMs came back and I HATE it. It surges twice, hard. Did this stock too.

I think you've already states you will address these two issues though.

I can’t quite tell the tire size by looking at them aside from the rim width obviously but I can tell those are probably 55lb tires or so not crazy but still nearly 20lbs more than stock weight. I’m running 42lb tires but I can only imagine some of the gear holding and even the shift points targeted on 1.04 are different based on increased load of the rotating mass plus perhaps some impact by that knobbier MT tires?

Have you tried B04 Toyota calibration? I recommend checking it out as a preview of things to come in 1.05. No flaring or surging or bumps etc

Nope, haven't tried it yet. I hate going to the dealer and don't put a lot of miles on the truck so visits are infrequent. Really glad to hear they fixed it. I am getting super pumped for 1.05

@OVTune I'm experiencing the exact same as your points 1, 2, and 3, even on stock wheels/tires/suspension and 04B04.

    1. Sticking in 4th gear on the highway has been a problem with the original tune, 1.03, 1.04, and has improved on 04B04, but could still be improved more. It would be great if it would hold 5th or 6th gear and just stay out of 4th on the highway.

    2. Upshifts happening way too soon. It always wants to be in 5th gear around 35mph, then runs at 1000 RPMs. So any time you need to accelerate, it requires an immediate downshift. Should just be in 4th gear.

    3. I'm with the others and would like to see the first 3 gears hold a little longer too.

PLEASE look at cruise control operation. This is a big one for some of us. Cruise control still sucks even on 04B04 when running 70-80 mph. It is better than the B03, 1.03/1.04, but still downshifts to 4th gear way too often. I'd honestly rather it stay in 5th gear even if it means losing 5mph from where the cruise is set, instead of downshifting to 4th and running at 3500 RPMs for the next couple miles, just to hold the exact speed its set at. Highway fuel mileage is bad because of all the 4th gear activity. Of course the higher speed limits here don't help at all, but who drives under the speed limit?

With that, if there was a way to get the transmission to just run in 5th or 6th gear when cruising on the highway, that would be ideal, and might even save some from getting rid of their Tacoma all together. Maybe it would be something like shifter in S, ECT on, shift up to 5th gear, then it will stay there until you either slow down past a certain speed, or manually shift up or down? I drive new Mazda vehicles very often and their version of the S mode is absolutely spot on AMAZING. If ours worked like theirs, we would be very happy.

I think to those reading this is crucial. Running on bootcamp sets up a partition so you aren't really running windows alongside OS X. The challenges many have had (myself included at times) was running a virtual machine within OS X which can interfere with communications protocols when flashing. I did many many flashes using Virtual Box and they all worked (eventually) but often took 15-25 tries (failing each time) before they would flash.

Cheap Lenovo Windows 10 laptop for <$200 is my dedicated tuning / techstream machine now and it has never failed a flash.

    @OVTune

One other callout regarding the B04 calibration is stop/go traffic. Prior versions of Toyota's cal were horrid in traffic because of the dead pedal and lethargic nature when trying to accelerate from rolling or stopped. Most versions of the tune while they were an improvement (primarily b/c of the increased throttle response and power) were still harsh at times if I was rolling slowly in traffic then touched the gas. Often resulting in a kick from behind feel as I'd watch the TC lock on my app. On B04, this has been drastically improved with the better throttle response and work they've done on the TC and shifting. Generally if I'm rolling in traffic, it will keep the trans in 3rd without torque converter locked so when I tap the gas it pulls instantly but with no jerky or thumping behavior. While I can't get up and go quite as fast as I could w/ 1.04 I can stay moving with traffic and smoothly accelerate from slow, rolling traffic. Hopefully this is something you can ensure remains intact with 1.05.

Can be hard to test properly as well... although with you now being in DC just drive into the city at about 7:30 in the morning a few times or head up to Baltimore in rush hour and you'll get a good test bed :)

I agree with all of this. Low speed operation on 04B04 is very nice. I hope 1.05 can match low speed operation of 04B04 and highway operation of 1.03.

1.04R 91 is incredibly smooth and civilized. No matter if I am accelerating from dead stop, tap the gas from rolling, or out of slow speed turns, all smooth. Downshifts are perfect, I honestly don't even feel them during normal day to day driving. Gone are those "kick from behind" feels as bshammer0 mentioned during all driving conditions.

1-2-3 up shifts can hold JUST A LITTLE longer, but please don't make 3rd gear hang like it did with 1.03. That makes driving in 30mph zone difficult. Down shift needs nothing, the best down shift is the one I don't notice, and I think 1.04R does just that.

I think the added power of 91 octane 1.04R and stock rims / tires make the 1-2-3 up shift much less of problem, compare to those who are running the OEM B04 calibration.
