Ziebart vs. Krown vs. Fluid Film

Which is more effective for rust protection?

I have a bad back so I have to pay to have somebody else do it...Assuming costs are not important, which is the better product?

I do like to go off-roading on the weekends.

I will it touched up once or twice a year.

 

Everybody will have a different opinion, but my 11 year old CRV still looked fantastic, and I live in a heavy snow/rust part of the continent.

Stay away from Ziebart. Fluid Film seems to be the product for DIY'ers.

Rust Check is another option in NY.

 

Is Ziebart still spraying their undercoating or have they changed the material? It works great in a demonstration so long as the coating is never chipped or develops a void, in which case it accelerates rust trapping moisture in.

Point here is undercoat does not equal rust protection necessarily. It's like paint for the underside. You will need to maintain the undercoat and spray it with Fluid Film, Krown or whatever other wax/oil/grease/goo you like.

My $0.02 is to just leave the original finish Toyota put on there and exposed so you can fix rust that does develop and cover it with your rustproofer of choice.

I know that it is fallacious reasoning here, but I'm putting my faith in the Canadians on this one. I'll be going for my 3rd Krown treatment in about 3 mos (annual application) ... and it still looks great under there.

 

I have not tried Rust Check but I have heard it advertised locally and looked into it. After much research and looking for the best shop that wouldn't damage my brand new truck I went with Krown.

John's Auto Care on Milton Avenue were great to work with, and did an amazing job.

 

Used Ziebart for years on my commercial work trucks and never had any rust issues. If put on correctly it should out last the vehicle and also is nice for sound deadening.

 

Krown for me.....I will be going for my 4th yearly treatment soon $150/year and so far the frame looks good. Usually where I live ( North East Pennsylvania) Tacoma frames are toast within 7-8 years

 

+1 Fluid film for me. Done it for years, never any issues, super easy to reapply. and super cheap. 1 can costs $10 dollars, i use about 2-3 cans each application

 

Fluid Film is a great product but I wouldn't consider a DIY job the same at getting Krown done. They got into both bed sides, inside all 4 doors, into the rocker panels, inside the tailgate, hood, and gas door area in addition to the frame and underside. My truck is still dripping a little bit over a week later.

 

Take Ziebart off the list. It is comparing apples to oranges. Everything else, Fluid Film etc, needs to be re-applied every year or so. As long as you re-apply whatever your choice is every winter, you will be fine.
Since you can't do it yourself, find the closest dealer for a product like Krown or fluid film and get it done.

 

I have used Fluid Film and applied it myself, but its a pain in the butt to apply if you don't have a friend with a lift. I have Ziebart do it now and they respray every year.

 

Ziebart resprays every year, but according to them they only respray 20-30%. Basically whatever comes off.

 

None. Mavcoat once a year, no buildup, no goat smelling goop. And you can weld through it.

 

I just looked up Mavcoat Steel Shield, sounds better than that oily, drippy, stinky and can't work under the truck after without tyvek suit I usually deal with.

Question is does it come off the paint easily if you happen to have overspray?
I may have to try this crap.

 

I’ve never had a problem with over spray, and having used it for some time when coating raw steel, I wasn’t concerned masking off. IF there was over spray, I guess I consider that part protected as well lol.

It smells different to different people, my buddy swears it smells like crackerjacks, I think it smells like a peanut butter sandwich.

 

Interesting, how many bottles to coat the frame?

 

I had one can left/laying around when I did mine, so I made it last, I hit the whole frame and suspension. I’m in NY, and it’s seen two winters, no issues. I plan to hit it with two cans this year.

 

its says if left undisturbed, it offers 6 months protection. What do they mean undisturbed? They say it will stand up to off roading, but what happens when a rock get flung up from the road, will it scrap off some of the coating? I like the idea of this stuff, but think the seeping oil might offer better long term protection.
