Will it stand up to sustained temperatures up to 300 F?

300 would be fine but I wouldn’t take aluminum above 350ish. You start aging it at that temp. Going higher would start making it soft

Getting a 55 gallon drum from someone this afternoon so that's all moot.

Also, for @mwc273 and anyone else who likes to play with welding- I just learned of a place called Metal Supermarket that is near Tri-County. Seems to be a great place to get small quanitities of various metals. AKA time to build an expo trailer!

There's a Metal Supermarket in Louisville too. Been a regular of theirs for years. They do cutting, fab work, some machine work, in addition to selling metal stock.

Just DRIVE your smoker. (If you can outlive the stigma of driving a jEEp)

Most steel drums also have a lining, not a big deal, just don't cook in the first fire. Also, friends used to get stainless steel chemical drums for making smokers or wood fire stoves. The stainless ones lasts a long time.

I'm hopeful this particular drum isn't a food-safe drum, as those have the super annoying lining that is a bitch to get rid of. If it's not, I'll just have to burn off the small amount of oil they ship with as rust inhibition. Either way, I'll pre-burn it to get the paint off the outside and respray it with high temp.
