Tips for getting through a hurricane?

Invest in some good board games, decks of cards and other things you can do without electricity.

 

Wind damages/destroys.

Water kills.

So get above any potential high water levels and hunker down in the most wind resistant shelter you can find.

Masking tape on windows doesn't do squat.

Having a source of fresh water, food that does not need refrigeration, solar charger for small lights and first aid supplies are good alternatives. Like a real camping trip.

 

You guys out west need to come visit Florida during a hurricane and see how it’s done.

1. Get 2 large garbage cans and fill with ice and beer.
2. Stock cooler with various grilling meats.
3. Make sure you have charcoal and/or propane.
4. Do this for 1 or 2 days and then carry on life as normal.

Tell that to the folks in Puerto Rico.

You've clearly had nothing but brushes if you think that is reality.

 

Don’t walk, do run to your nearest auto parts store and stack up on tire repair plugs.
If your truck makes it thru the storm, the biggest challenge is making it thru all the road debris and nails that are gonna nail you.
Most shops will likely be closed or without power and if not, they maybe overwhelmed so you maybe on your own for a while.

For a truck, I have it fueled and parked where water and trees won't hit it. Ideally sheltered from windblown debris but I figure do you best on this one. I have recovery gear including chainsaws, tow straps, etc. all ready to go.

I'm on the other side of the country but we have to contend with hurricanes. Tree damage and flooding are the biggest issues here.

Lived in Stuart, FL in 05 when Jeanne hit us head on. Was in New Orleans for Katrina. I been through alot of hurricanes.

You reference Puerto Rico (another place I've lived). They have the governmental and economical infrastructure slightly better than a 3rd world country and their electrical grid is garbage. That's why they suffered so much. Hawaii will be fine. Some wind and rain and some downed trees.

 

Well I live down the street from him in Stuart, FL. Have been through multiple category 2-3 storms, several of which had the eye pass right over so we got the brunt of things. In addition to the above directions, I suggest:

• Buy some 5 gallon buckets from lowes, HD, etc and fill them up with clean water for drinking. Have enough for a few weeks
• Buy enough non-perishable food to support your family for 2 weeks.
• Buy a few large tarps to fix any roof damage
• Fill your vehicles up with gas and park them.
• Get a few led powered lights, lanterns, etc and a LOT of batteries.
• Get a battery operated radio.
• Find a room in your home to ride it out in. No windows or exterior walls.
• If you have a generator great. Make sure it runs, you have adequate extension cords, and you run it outside. Every hurricane has sad tales of people running them inside and dying from CO.
• Get some cash from the ATM. $500-1000.
• Make a medical kit for your family. From bandaids to coagulation powder.
• Get all you and your families medications in a safe place. Plan ahead on this, as hundreds died in Puerto Rico due to. It having this planned out and access to medicines post storm.

You're going to lose electricity, and much like Puuerto Rico, you won't have fleets of utility trucks drive to you like we do in Florida to fix the problems. You may be without power a few months. Prepare for it. Hopefully Hawaii is not as corrupt and things get fixed quicker.

 

I grew up in Hawaii. Never got hit by a major hurricane that I can remember. I was a toddler when the last big one hit. Definitely remember some bad storms. Bust out the board games, flashlights/lanterns, candles even. The power WILL go out and will be out for extended periods. Make sure you have plenty of gas and water. Sounds like you have food.

Board up your windows. No joke. The wind alone can break windows. Only other thing you can do is pray your roof stays attached.

Evacuation is always a good plan. I lost the roof of my house and my company car in a tropical storm. Just say no to a hurricane.

All good recommendations. But did not see the following mentioned, growing up and lived in south Florida, hunkering down for about 5/8 hurricanes ranging Category 1 to Category 5, I recommend the following:

• DO NOT LEAVE the shelter or house until storm has completely passed. You may not know if you are in the eye of the storm (deceiving as winds calm down and you'll see the sun/clear skies). Or you may get hit with an outerband with a red cell that has potential of a small Tornado or Hurricane gust in which you can be hit with debris.
• If you have to leave your house in the middle of the storm, be cautious of power lines and trees. Contact your neighbors prior should you feel the need to. If the house feels unsafe, pack clothes, and head to designated shelter.
• Do obtain a battery radio to listen to news and emergency updates.
• Do prepare a safe room (such as a bathroom or room in the middle of the house with no windows) in which you can place your family in the event that a window break to pressure differential or roof looses integrity and gets blown off.
• Board up the house.
• If you stay home, stay vigilant on any leaks that might occur during the storm. I had to make a whole in my ceiling during Hurricane Irma to mitigate a roof leak from further damaging my ceiling that was heading towards an electrical outlet and fan.
• Waterproof bags for important documents.
• Take pictures and videos of your entire property, in and out, including vehicles. Makes insurance claims alot easier.

And i believe everyone else here has covered everything else. Some drinks, board games, and stay safe.

 

make sure you have decided upon a "safe" word in case things begin to get out of hand.

 

You have to just open your throat and chug, but watch out for brain freezes. Also sugary alcoholic drinks usually lead to hangovers.

 

This and take out some cash its easier to pay for stuff post hurricane. Here in FL a lot of tornadoes are generated during a hurricane.If your roof comes off seek shelter in a room surrounded by four interior walls with no windows preferably and cover yourself with a mattress. The mattress will protect you from broken glass. In the eye of the storm it will be calm its not a good idea to assume the storm is over its a half way point.

 

Lots of good suggestions in here already. We kept custom cut plywood for all the windows when I lived in FL, and always filled the tub and gallon milk jugs up with water.

Don't forget the kegger for the hurricane party, too!

 

Well aware. It's just some wind and rain. Board up, stock up, and get drunk. This too shall pass.

 

FEMA & its 3 days of water and food cracks me up when I see that. Its not accurate at all.

I'd say a weeks worth of food, water, TP. Then next things would be baby wipes, batteries, can opener, flashlights, radio, water proof bags for clothes, 2 pairs of shoes, hats, gloves, knife, lighters, cigars.

Everyone should have a min of 30 days to 3 month food and water. Good Luck.
