Tips for getting through a hurricane?

I'll put money on it that Lihue is in more danger than the big island. Look at the time and date bar across the bottom. This is the future-cast from the meteorology department where I work. Looks like the eye wall should stay south of everything until the northwestern end of the island chain.

 

@Trident904 is correct. Be prepared for 1-2 days of storm. I stayed home for both Jean and Francis. had power restored 1 day before the second storm made landfall. Both less than 50 miles from my front door. Second storm removed power for another 7 or 8 days as I recall.

With that said, I always try to prepare for the worst and hope for the best, you will likely fall somewhere between these.

Board/shutter windows; freeze water (once power fails it will help maintain temp to preserve food); put pictures, documents, and treasured memory items in plastic bins/containers to protect from leaks or floods; move to higher ground if possible; coddle with and enjoy your family.

In my case I make sure I have 3 tanks full of propane to grill/cook after the storm and I make sure my friends and neighbors know that I will help them in any way I can to prepare for and recover after the storm.

Yeah but really depends on the wind field and precip being dumped. The images I posted are winds.

They're gonna feel it, but likely won't get the eye wall until Lihue.

 

I assume if the models are accurate Lihue will experience the most damgae. Thank god Hawaii has MTN's to break some of that shit up.

Buy stuff you might need ahead of time like bottled water, non-perishable food items, fill your tanks with gas and get extra if you can..... try not to use too much afterwards. A radio would be good and ham license with a hand held might be nice. Try to arrange with your employer the ability to work from home if possible in order to not burn gas.

Got a first aid kit? A generator to keep your perishables going would be good. Finally, a way to cook food.... gas grill, charcoal, etc.

Do what we do in FL, stock up on beer and hamburgers. Grilling during the hurricane outside makes you a survivor.

This is my biggest concern and the fact there’s only one road in and one road out for our part of the island.

From the last two that came through here:

1. Move truck away from house and in the clear (no trees)
2. Fill up truck before and any extra cans you have.
3. Charge up all batteries. I have solar rechargeable for backup plan
4. Pick up water. Rule is 1 gal per person per day. Consider a lifestraw for backup plan
5. Pick up some room temp foods that are easy to store and eat
6. Make sure your med kits are current
7. Test and service generator if you have one. Should be doing this every 6 months or so anyway
8. Board up windows.
9. Bring in anything that could become a projectile.
10. Trim up trees, but only if the debris can be picked up before the storm hits. We get lots of warning here in FL.
11. Make sure weather radio is working
12. Gather all the board games and ride it out

I'm sure I missed something.
