The SKINNY on skinny tires

The key to rubbing or not including a really good alignment all boils down to compounded tolerances and how each truck was built and in what way they were within those tolerances. Before my frame replacement with a good alignment I barely touched my cab mount and needed minor plastics trimmed with 285s on an effective -13 offset wheel. After the frame replacement and an alignment that isn't where it needs to be I rub like crazy and will still rub with a good alignment as the tolerances are different on the new frame and where the body was placed on it etc.

 

Tires still performing awesome, not bad travel out of stock springs.

Is the 285/75/17 considered a tall skinny? just cruising through here and didn't see it in the OP. It is a 34".. Comes in a cooper st maxx

 

Not sure what constitutes tall skinny, I'd say probably right on the edge?

 

Here's the specs from cooper's website.. Theyre just a hair narrower than a standard 285.. Like you said, im guessing they'd be right on the border of being a tall skinny.

 

For this thread 255 or 235 are tall skinny. 285 are pretty standard for most people lifting.

 

Gotcha.. Seems like for a 34" tall, 11" wide seems skinny to me..

 

255 or 10" would be the cutoff for width, regardless of height.

Have you checked out any 34x10.5R17 tires? IIRC there's only a couple choices though; Cooper, BFG, and Interco.

 

I have not, im running 12" wide 295s on my truck. Will be considering some skinnies though when these wear out. Will probably stick with coopers, my st maxx have been tough as nails. Have never heard of interco, will have to look at those as well

You've never heard of super swampers? Interco makes them.

 

Pretty sure he's running the 285/75/17 ST Maxx.. I asked him about them before I bought my 295s

Here’s some pics of my 235/85/16 falken wildpeak at3’s that I just installed. I was torn on which size to go with, but I’m glad I chose the skinny. It’s 10 ply but doesn’t seem stiff or rough riding at all. Pictures are next to 265/70/16’s.

 

Anyone have these yet?

I’ve run the older AT3s in non-tall/skinny sizes. They performed well for what they were and what they were intended for, being a mild AT tire with great road/everyday driving manners. They did get louder towards the end of their life.

Supposedly the newer lineup has an updated/improved rubber compound...blah blah blah. To me they look to be the same tire, just with a cooler looking more aggressive sidewall.

I’ll likely be going back to Coopers (AT3 or STMaxx again) when my current Falkens die.

A few more on the truck. These tires look cool and have performed well for me in dirt sand and snow.



Forgive me if this was mentioned before but I didn't read all 57 pages yet, but are you guys able to fit 255/85-16 with no modifications? I thought maybe a cab mount chop would be required but I'm not sure. I'm thinking of sizing up next time.
