Indeed. I’m even migrating back to alloy hoops too. Though i’m not sure the Atomik’s on my MTB bikes will ever give out. But the HED belgiums on my CX are soooo good. And 1/4 the cost!

I don't get carbon rims. For me rims are consumables like tires and grips. My rims rarely last a season. Maybe i just suck haha

 

I honestly considered carbon wheels when I went to the park last and checked out my buddies V10. I swear his wheels shaved off around 6 pounds off his rig which was excessively light. The next day he cracked them on a rock garden and got ejected off the bike. These are the fancy Envy wheels BTW...so yea man I will stick to what I got as that rock garden was jack shit and Im surprised they died there.

 

Hey everyone. Enjoying this thread.

I just moved to the Santa Cruz area. There seems to be a ton of trails to ride around here so I want to start riding more. I have a Marin 29er hardtail that I picked up off craigslist. Mostly just used to ride dirt roads/fire roads etc. It isn't in the best shape and I have been trying to decide if I should replace some components, or just upgrade to a better bike. Any recommendations for a budget conscious rider?

Don't spend too much upgrading that bike. There are some nice relatively inexpensive options from Canyon/YT/etc factory direct now that you can get brand new.

 

I like them for the long stuff like SM100 where a few ounces on the hoops can make the difference between a fun day or a dreadful day. This of course controlled for the fact that i rely on kit to offset pizza and beer fitness

 

Get some of the new Santa Cruz Reserve carbon wheels, they will replace them if you break them while riding them. Straight from the website: "Lifetime. No gimmicks. Not limited. If you do actually manage to break our rim while out riding, we'll replace it for free. And probably high five you in the process! I've hammered the shit out of my NOX carbon wheels. Never had an issue. My Giant TRX wheels however (also carbon) dented on a fairly mellow ride.
Lumping all carbon wheels into a pile and saying they posses __ properties makes no sense. They can be built to whatever properties the makes wants. Some are more compliant, some stiffer, some lighter and fast and some heavier and burlier. Just depends. I can totally see how SC does that warranty, they know most peoples concerns, so they built them burly. I have no issue running carbon hoops on anything, only downside is $$.
