Not necessarily. I ran the stock offroad wheels and still had the same issue and those had 3.75 inches of backspacing. If you increase caster angle substantially, you push the wheel further away from the cab mount. IMO, caster angle would help far more than wheel backspacing. Not saying backspacing isn't a factor though.

EDIT: The backspacing I quoted for my old stock wheels is completely wrong. Should be 5.25 I believe for the Offroad stock wheels as stated further down.

I am running the TRD Baja wheels as well with 4.5. Can you explain the issue? I didn't consider it when i got the truck because the wheels are stock, but I am thinking about jumping to 17s for more tire choices. What is the ideal offset and backspace for 255 and 285? I may jump to 285 if i do CMC and pinch weld smash.

the 4.5" BS pushes the tire outboard, which makes the tire swing in a wider arc when you turn. This is why it rubs on your truck and not on mine. I have stock steel wheels, which I believe, are 5.25" BS.

However, due to wheels, truck tolerances, etc, the answers will be many and contradictory. :D

I think i have a little bit of an understanding of what you are saying. But I have read about this more than i care to admit. Unfortunately not everything makes sense to me. But what you are saying is not necessarily true depending on the wheels offset and width. Which i think are the two measurements used to determine backspacing. This is also where i get confused. I know there are certain combinations that work well with different tire sizes, but getting the diameter, width, offset, and backspacing combo that work with 255 and 285 would be beneficial to a lot of people. There should just be a simple chart somewhere.

Those tires look really cool, very military. Did you happen to weigh one? Online they are 49-58 lbs depending on which site you are on.

I know this is an old thread, but to get the tires I’m looking for, to fit my factory wheel which is a 16, will I need a lift on my 2015 TRD OR? The tires I’m looking at are the Toyo R/T Pros. TIA! Tire size will be 255/85r16

I have run many sets of this size tire in stock steel wheels. All sets have been either Toyo M55 or Dean Tires Backcountry MT3. I have roughly a 2.5" lift, but suspension fully cycles without issues - no bump stop spacers or other limiting mechanisms. Go for it, you'll be glad you did!
