Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I'm not accustom to tuning or turbos. Is the standard turbo tune going to be optimized for a certain setup such as specific exhaust, headers, other bolt on mods, etc.?

I presume the turbo kit will include everything intake related

 

#5 especially for me. 1.03's highway feel was so much better.

 

I'm unlikely to be a Turbo customer...but on the off chance that were the case (it's not out of the realm of possibility that I could decide to use the Tacoma to tow a small travel trailer...for me, towing it with a stock Tacoma, even OVtuned, is not acceptable, but "OVTTuned" would be a different story)...are you offering any install service there in NOVA? I'm from NOVA and still have alot of family in the area, so I'm there 3-4 times a year. If yes, any idea how much additional $? Inquiring minds want to know.

I enjoyed 1.03's highway as it gained speed effortlessly, but the take off from a stand still sucked bad.

 

Yup, I am just blown away how smooth 104R is.

Regarding highway, 1.03 had a certain pedal "dead zone". Small hill or wind, I press the gas pedal, truck does nothing, naturally, I expect the RPM to at least go up. Press it down little further, it does shift to 5th, sometimes.
On 1.04R, I press the pedal, truck responds immediately, RPM increases. If it need to downshift to 5th, it will do so. It holds 5th gear much better than any previous tune version, and accelerate / maintain speed better. The pedal dead zone is gone in 1.04R.

 

Did you spend any time on 1.04?

 

Less than a week. I had the downshift clunk on 1.04, flashed back to 1.03. Last week I updated to 04B04 and immediately flashed to 1.04R.

 

While the wait is on for 1.05 , Has anyone a good tell on the differences between the Toyota 0B40 and the 1.04R ?

 

Is 0B40 a manual ECU? 04B04 is automatic ECU, which is what I have.
I didn't bother running 04B04, in fact, I waited until 1.04R became available before upgrading to 04B04 via Techstream. I wanted to take full advantage of 91 octane.

I was under the impression that all previous tunes were load based, not fixed rpm.

Ok , no other answers from the regulars so , Why would you NOT even want to compare the Toyota update to a OVTune on top of it ? I am a fan of the OVtune for the 91 octane for performance users . For 87 octane users it was slightly better than having a select shift pro (SSP) with the stock tune. Now that Toyota has the latest TSB 0058-18 or the same TSB -0062-18 it is debatable if there is any advantage to either for the 87 octane. I do NOT want to take away any credit from Mat at OVTune as he has been way ahead of the game to make this 3.5L and 6spd auto a much better combo. In fact I believe he alone forced Toyota to come up with the new update. I have read about several if not many people saying the Toyota update is just what the truck needed to be what it should have been from the factory .
For the 87 octane user , has it come down to the fact that Toyota has attempted to ,or corrected ,the crappy shifting and throttle response but it should have been much earlier and before the truck came out in 2016 ?
We really look forward to the OVTune 1.05 for the 87,91,93octane tunes . It will be awesome to prepare for an upcoming tow , etc. and flash to 93 octane and back again to 87 for everyday driving . My friend and I will find out for ourselves and predict that it will be better than the Toyota fix because it will not have to satisfy the government .
It is very cool that one guy can outdo and make a corp. the size of Toyota change .
Come on 1.05 , and even better performance for the 87 octane people !

They are based on load, rpm, AND throttle input

 

Almost tempted to try the TSB and 1.04R before 1.05 comes out... I'm curious

 

It basically feels like a 87 OVT map, except without the lower rpm benefits that Mat tweaked/added/improved and less throttle sensitivity than the OVT maps. So overall, quite good. Although it makes you wonder if Toyota got ahold of Mat's maps as a "customer" and then picked it apart cause they didn't release a bunch of updates until it was where it needed to be. Complete shit to quite good with one map lol

 

1.04R kept the OEM 04B04 shifting tables, Mat incorporated the throttle / valve / ignition / fueling improvements for 91 octane. I wanted to take advantage of the 91 octane power enhancements which Toyota TSB doesn't provide.

 

IMHO, you and I have similar conservative driving style, we both don't care for the aggressive tip-in from 1.03, both don't care for screaming 3rd gear at 30mph. For that, you will find big improvement in 1.04R. Up and down shifts are a lot smoother compared to 1.03. 1.04R does shift through 1-2-3 pretty quick, but I can easily remedy that by pressing the accelerator little harder. I can actually modulate the throttle and it reflects how the truck shift, what a concept!

I don't think there is power loss with 1.04R, but the buttery smooth shifts and changes to torque converter engagement algorithm make us "perceive" power loss, or slower acceleration.

 

Ive always run the 87 tune but with both 87 and higher octane fuels (depending on availability). I definitely noticed a loss in the low end with the new Toyota flash but aside from that, its pretty solid. The low end loss is definitely noticeable and not insignificant, I stalled the other day and I haven't done that in ages. I'm hoping 1.05 is a combo of this and the previous work and if that happens, I don't think I'll have any complaints about this truck....

...well aside from it doesnt have turbos (right @Chipi3s???)
