Different take on an air intake

I'm loven it! Feedback ASAP.

I'd love to get a Camry intake and make it work on our trucks.

 

Now this mod is not just your typical air intake modification, so far I've noticed:

1) about a 200%, no make that 300%, increase in throttle response, the throttle is actually anticipating my needs and moving it before I do, mind-boggling
2) my milage has increased to 31.5mpg,,, in the city
3) the butt-dyno tells me that I've added at least 35hp
4) it seems to be quieter in the cab, apparently the air intake in the fendor must add noise to the cab


or,,, maybe it's just 4) !

Ok, ok, just a bit of fun at the expense of all that have added an intake and found all sorts of subjective facts to back up the purchase.

So far I don't have any objective data, but will watch my milage and will make a few G-Tech runs here sometime with this intake and the stocker and see if there's any performance benefits.

From my Scanguage, the intake temp at highway speed is about 1-2 degrees over ambient temp, while the stocker was about 5-6 degrees. The new intake does seem to heat soak quicker then the stocker when stopped, or in slower traffic. I'll need to add some heat insulation to the pipe to see if that helps.

Why did I do it you ask? Or maybe you didn't ask, but I'll tell you anyway. I am not a fan of any of the aftermarket intakes (TRD, AFE, Volant, K&N) on the market as the 3-4 hp increases at high rpms, along with the intake noise just aren't worth it to me.

In past trucks, I have seen noticable bit of a performace/milage increase with the use of some sort of a ram air intake. I also don't believe that a dual intake (like grill intake along with the fendor intake) is going to add air to the throttle body as the pressure difference between the grill and the fendor and the throttle body can actually cause the air to flow from the grill to the fendor, at the expense of the throttle body.

Anyway, I picked up the Volant ram air part off of Craigslist for $100 and rigged up the intake parts from Spectre joiners and some aluminium pipe.

What y'awl think?

Nope, it's still using the stock airbox, which contains the intake noise just like stock, which is why I went this route,,,, not a fan of intake noise.

And actually, like I said in the second post, it quiets the cab some as apparently the fendor intake resolates/reverberates in the fendorwell and into the cab.

 

watch out cause Volant Intakes have been known to run the engine to lean...

I noticed in the picture that you just used the RAM part of the volant Intake...you truck may not be getting the necessary air to the intake manifold thus making your engine run lean...do you have a SG2 to pull up your A/F Ratio...?

nice job in the mod...but you should have got rid of the OEM intake completely and gone with a TRD, AFE, AEM intake instead...

he's still using the OEM intake but he just remove the OEM shroud that enters into the fender and replaced it with the Volant Ram Intake...so it should be a drop in filter...

 

the only thing that a dual intake (grill intake and fender intake) will do for you is get your AIT (Air Intake Temps) down quicker and closer to Ambient Air Temp (outside air temperatures)...

if you want the intake to increase air flow into the intake manifold...Forced Induction (F/I) is your only bet...whether S/C or T/C those are the only ways to force more air into the IM

but because he's only using the RAM part of the Volant Intake I'm worried that his engine is being suffocated cause its not getting the necessary air flow into the intake manifold...that's the reason why I asked if he had a SG2 that way he can monitor A/F Ratio on the fly while he's driving...

for Naturally Aspirated (N/A) engines like the 1GR-FE...you should be seeing around 14.1-14.5 when cruising (coasting)...while it may drop down to as low as 12.1-12.3 during WOT...

Only when you change the stock airbox with the Volant intake tube itself. The delta in the intake tube diameter from the stock setup is what makes the MAF sensor read an incorrect amount of air.

Ypu, A/F is in the same range as with stock.

Stock filter in the stock airbox. Haven't even Pro Dry'd it yet. May do that later, but not now. One mod at a time to see what delta it makes.

Very good point though. I delayed getting this installed until I had my SGII installed, and a reasonably good feel for the stock data coming back (A/F, IAT, MPG, MAF). As it turns out though the MAF data from the SGII is just too hard to figure a delta from, so I've kind of thrown that parameter out.

 

I agree while being able to see the A/F Ratio on the SG2 is good...its not sound...

that's why having a Wideband A/F Gauge always helps cause you can see the symptoms before it causes major problems...
