I just bought a new Tacoma and noticed it had some damage on the roof near one of the roof racks. I took it in today for a quote on repairing the damage and it was over $1000. They said they would need to keep the car for 5 days and would have to disassemble the roof panel, roof rack, and both rear windows to paint it and repair the dent. This makes me a little nervous since I've never had very good luck with body shops and I don't want it to come back in worse shape.

Is this worth fixing? Will this eventually rust?

I wouldn't worry about it for $1000. I know it sucks having a new truck w/ a scratch but you'll probably have more scratches/dings in the future. Its a truck and shit happens

When my truck was only around 3 weeks old, it got assaulted by a suicidal wild turkey, resulting in the damage below.
The estimate was $600, and they said they would have to remove that piece, which goes all the way over the roof line and seems to include the entire backside of the cab below the rear window and back up over the passenger side!
I was tempted to just leave it because my deductible was $500, but then the paint started chipping off! Of course, this meant it would eventually lead to rust.
In the end, I got it fixed, and I don't regret it at all. Yes, it is a truck and yes it will get more bumps/scratches/dings, but this I felt that this one was actually value reducing, so yeah, the money part sucked, but I'm still glad I got it fixed properly.

Would some touch up paint prevent it from chipping/rusting ?

It looks like it's just down to the primer, and not the metal, so you won't have to worry about rusting. I would put some touch-up paint on it just to make it less obvious.

    Get er' fixed!

Hold your dealer accountable for providing GOOD products. Would you accept a big screen TV with a cracked screen? Probably not.

my questions is did you recently buy the truck from that stealership and just never noticed the damage to the roof until now?

or did the damage happen while on the road?

if the damage happened prior to you purchasing the vehicle from that stealership and they didn't tell you about it but you never noticed it until now...the stealership is just asking for trouble...if you can prove to them with a picture of the truck with the damage the day you bought the truck they have to repair it for you no questions asked for not telling you about the damage prior to you signing the paper work...

sorry to see this happen to you...good luck on getting this settled and repaired...please keep us posted...

I didn't notice it until 2 days after I bought the car. The dealership has been great and offered to fix it, but my worry is the amount of work (removing front & read window, roof rack and headliner) that needs to be done for some small dents & scratches.

I'm worried about my car coming out worse.

I say get it done... Hold them accountable... Make them pay for it too. Dealers make plenty of money off us and they should be providing a quality product delivered perfect to us IMO.

Like I said, would you accept a new big screen TV with a cracked screen?

If we don't hold dealers accountable, we will all end up paying the price with low quality products.

^ I thought that is was damage that you did to the truck. If the dealership is offering to repair the damage for free then I would def take them up on the offer!

I bought my truck 3 weeks ago...Last weekend i was at the motox races and some kid threw a rock into my c pillar denting and chipping the paint pretty good. I wish i found they kid that did it..., i feel your pain.

Atleast yours is on the roof, i'd just touch it up and be done with it. It's gonna be hard to see since it's on the roof

if the stealership is going to repair the damages under their $$$ let them do it...worst case scenario they fuck it up and they'll have to repair it again or you can always say i've had enough I either want an even swap or my money back...

right now with all the bad publicity that the media is giving to Toyota...Toyota will do just about anything to make sure they make their customers happy and keep them...

BTW...did you know that there is a huge recall for GM and Chrysler vehicles...do you think the media has uttered anything about it...HELLZ NO cause its a domestic car company and they need all the help they can get...

    GM Recalling 1.4 Million vehicles
    (17 different models)

    Chrysler Recalling 600,00 vehicles

^I completely agree with his statement...

Long story lol. All started when my truck was bought new in '06. The next closest dealer is 45 min. away :(

    problems:
    warped wheels from dealer
    timing chain cover oil leak
    rear leafs
    clock spring
    tailgate
    power steering pump

Truck problems is not the issue. It's the shitty "too bad so sad, I don't give a shit" attitude the dealer gave me. And good luck contacting corporate Toyota. I've tried calling, but I always get a machine that says something like "We are sorry, but due to the mass amount of calls, we cannot take your call at the moment..."

It's all good though, I'm one less customer they have to deal with.

WOW that's messed up...honestly if I were you I would personally call Toyota Corporate, email them, leave voice mails every day until someone picks up the phone or calls you back. every Toyota dealership keeps extensive information about all the work whether servicing, warranty, etc and TC can see all of this.

TC will most likely send a rep. down to take a look at your truck in person and tell you what they can do for you.

worst comes to worse you could always get a lawyer and tell that stealership either help me or I'm suing you for a lemon vehicle and get your money back...i know its a pain in the ass but its your $$$ you shouldn't have to settle for shitty stealership service and a crappy vehicle...

Don't let the stealerships grab you by the balls and take you for a ride...you already gave them your $$$ they are supposed to work for you not against you.

I'm lucky cause I have some good friends that work for Toyota where I get my truck serviced...only my friends are allowed to actually work on my truck...no one else...:D I don't trust anybody other than my friends...

    ASE = Ask Someone Else...lol

You could also file a complain with the Better Business Bureau... These days you don't hear that much... But when you identify to the business that you know what the BBB is and you know how to make a complaint, sometimes they listen a little more.
