Just hoping for any improvement, not complete extinction. only thing that would piss me off is if for some reason it got worse!

I had a howl start around 1k. My truck is sitting at the dealer for a whine right now. Toyota rep is supposed to look at it today and drive it. May get a new third member as they believe it is a pinion bearing. Had the whine around 50 mph which is why the truck was taken in the investigate.

Shaker posted a nice pic of one. It is the center section that houses your gears, differential/locker and has the pinion/yoke that connects to the rear driveshaft.

I'll talk to my dealer Monday and tell them after reading about this issue I want hold off on my purchase. Scaring away potential cash customers may help.

Okay but its not a mechanical issue. They have a TSB to address this. It's not something every one can hear or has issue with. They sell 20k trucks a month.

Just trying to help in the only way I could think of. Maybe one less truck sold wouldn't make anyone blink. And if they don't all have the issue...
I guess I'll just make sure to get a good test-drive before I take delivery.

Most of the whining reported here started after several hundred miles so I’d test drive it for sure but don’t get your hopes up if it doesn’t do it on the test drive. Mine started around 800 miles.

Hope this works out for you.

They replaced my third and it made it worse.

The TSB put it back to the same noise level as before the replacement.

Loud but at least now I can hold a conversation without people stopping and pointing the noise out to me.

Good luck. I’m debating pushing mine a bit too because it seems to be getting slightly louder post TSB. It’s still nothing like it was before does seem to be increasing slightly.

I had good luck. They said they'd open up a case and see it through resolution.

Agreed. I still have an open case with them. Also, if it bothers me enough I’ll get my lawyer (me) on them. LOL. :)

I feel bad for the salesmen that have to deal with this stuff. They're just local guys making ends meet, ya know.

I agree completely. I also feel bad for the service department personnel as well. Something went awry here. I fully believe it’s a resonance issue but it’s one that shouldn’t have occurred to this level, not in this modern day with all the money pumped into R&D. I’m frustrated yet conflicted because I really like my truck. I hope enough people make enough noise to get something permanent done and that doesn’t involve installing insulation everywhere, or ultimately gifting us a set of noise canceling headphones. Fix it, Toyota. But, Toyota needs to step it up because the competition is coming in waves. Ford, FCA, a new Nissan, VW, and a new Colorado will be here soon. I still like my Tacos but many will jump ship if this kind of stuff keeps up. One of the main reasons I’ve driven Tacos for years is so I don’t have to stay in the shop all the time but that hasn’t been the case with this one.

They all have the issue. Its a normal characteristic of the truck. Toyota has clearly stated that to everyone for years now.

I’m betting the noise isn’t going away unless you throw an aftermarket gearset in. The factory 3rd swaps don’t fix it and my TSB (leaf springs and “dampers”) didn’t either.

I’d have to say the TSB at least reduced the speed range that I notice the noise. So it’s a good start.
