The shocks being rated at 500# means 500# over the stock weight.

But the stock springs obviously are not taken into consideration because they already need to be removed for the 500# springs. Still only 500#.

No you need 280# if you remove the bumper with stock springs.

Won’t work at my place. Only time to get a raise is at review time.

I can get my way around slightly better than most engineers but I’m no smooth talker.

Im sure you can fluff up your stuff now though. The magic word I see that gets everyone's attention is HVAC design experience. That said, just being a design guy shows you are atleast on one side of the fence while being a field engineer is the other.

Think I’d go crazy doing mep design. Worked it for a bit and you pretty much tell everyone in the field fuck your shit that doesn’t work because of this. The field guys yell at you and say I can do your job better than you. The biggest dick contest 24-7. Almost went into that but decided to go to the high tech side of stuff. I prefer the quiet nerdy shit.

@itaro what springs did you go with? I’m lost on how this All originated. I know you got new springs but what are they, and what did you have before?

Yep that is exactly that...kind of why I am looking to get into other stuff than the MEP realm although this business wont ever go away which is a good thing. People love trying to call out engineers in this line of work.

As a mechanic I feel engineers can fuck off. Tell me why you build a truck around the turbocharger so you have to lift the cab off to replace it when it goes out every 30k like clockwork...

    Carry on bitching about leafsprings

@dtaco06 ^ Exactly what I’ve said from the start but now you’re hearing it from the originator of the exact leaf springs on @itaro ’s truck

Auto industry is brutal. Mostly the guys above engineering say go with cheaper or just lack of design time.

Im just guessing, but they might have done this so that it is required to go to a costly shop to do the maintenance. I know for some items I have seen on the taco, it seems if they invested 5 more bucks that things could be easier with many things...but then why would they want to limit the labor costs of these vehicles and make them easy enough to never see a dealer. Is that the drive here...hopefully not, but I think maintenance costs and the value of creating such a feature for the common user all depends on the variants and whether the cost benefits are there.

I would like to think at the end of the day that Toyota will do whatever makes their product cost more and brings more folks into their dealerships for continued service through maintenance intervals...but who knows man.

As Mike said, design integration isn't cheap either...and if no one bitches about these improvements in a relative capacity...then why change?

Also I haven't heard it mentioned, but unlike coils for our trucks which mostly have a linear spring rate (do any companies make progressive coils for our trucks?), leaf springs for our trucks are progressive. I believe that's why you see their load capacity and ride height change expressed with something like "2.75inches of lift with 500lbs" instead of "600lbs/in" for coils.

To make it even murkier from what I've seen there's significantly more variation in leafs ability to handle load. One pack might hold it higher while another sags like a mofo. Leafs also have different designs and between brands/styles may react differently to loads.

Crap like that makes it hard to say XXX pounds will cause XXX right height change on a given set of theoretical leaf springs.
