Hi. My wife's Tacoma just ran out of the "free" oil changes on her truck and they want $163 to change it, haha. So anyway, I'm going to do it myself and thought I'd ask some quick info here.

I've changed the oil on my '16 Tundra many times, but didn't know if the Tacoma was much different. What oil do you recommend? I use the Mobil 1 0W-20 on my Tundra, can I use the same?

Also, do you know which oil filters a TRD Sport comes with? I'm looking at Sparks Parts to order them and they have the internal filter cartridge like what my Trundra has, but they also show a more traditional screw on canister filter. I dont have the truck here to get under it and check.

I'm going to try to google how to change it, but if anyone can let me know or send me a video, that would be very helpful. I couldn't imagine it being much different than the Tundra, but you never know, ha. Thanks..!

It’s a cartridge filter, you can order a case of 12 at a time and have them for 100k+ miles and get the appropriate oil filter socket, it’ll be on tight so use a breaker bar. Also buy some oil drain plug gaskets.

The oil filter on the truck has a small drain plug in it, as well so you can drain the small amount out of the filter cover before you unscrew it.

Use any 0W20 you want, they’re almost all synthetic, it takes 6.2 Qts.

There’s tons of videos on YouTube

Ok, so it's the same oil, that's good. I have the breaker bar. I also have a oil filter socket, assuming its the same size as the Tundra. I wasn't sure being it's a V8, vs the V6 in the Tacoma.

The drain plug sounds the same as the Tundra.

So I'd just need these then huh?

That is and it looks like a great price.

The filter tool is the same for the 5.7l and 3.5l.

Also, being that it's a "TRD", do I really need the TRD high performance or is that just overkill? We dont do anything out of the normal driving with it, so no off-roading.

Mine takes 6.2 Quarts, but maybe it is different between 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive models or sport and Off Road.

Nah. Mine takes 6.2qt also. I think the only differences are the oil cooler with the tow package and if you change the filter or not. Either way, you'll have some left over if you're buying jugs. If buying a 6qt case, just dump them all in and ride on.

My dealer is quoting $45 for a synthetic oil change, up to five quarts. I have no idea how much that 6th quart would cost. In the end, it is still significantly less to do it at home once ToyotaCare is done.

I dont think it's right at all. I think they are just trying to rip her off and add all this other stuff that she "needs". Typical dealership bs. So screw 'em, I'll do it myself and be better for it anyway.
First oil change I ever got "free" on my Tundra, they didn't put the oil cap back on, so after a couple days of driving it, I popped the hood to find oil sprayed all over it.

That's what I do, i have an empty 1 qt container that I refill from the last oil change, then add a fresh 5 qt and Im off---its usually pretty close to the mark both times i've done it.

That, and the distance between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick is usually 1qt. It is safe to run anywhere in the that range.

Also works if you dont' like your local walmart. I can't stand it, but will go to the automotive department get the 5 qt jug for $22-$25 dollars and submit the rebate to Mobil 1 and get $12 back for each jug. This way my oil changes with the filters are pretty cheap

The problem that I had with Walmart (beside the crazies there) is that they were often out of the oil that I needed. This was usually 15w-50 for my bikes. I haven't seen a shortage of 0w-20.

One time, they were out of the 5qt jugs that I ordered online for pick up and told my wife that we good an upgrade because they gave her five individual quarts of the same stuff.
