BC95570E-A8BD-44DE-9D74-7652526463C6.jpg So guys and gals I’m a current owner of a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. I’m planning to turn this vehicle into an off-road adventure vehicle. The reason I say a year is because my friends and I have a cross country trip with multiple tracks through rocks, snow, mud, and sand.

Currently my truck has a stage 2 icon lift w/ 17X8 vapor fuel beast rims and 275 70R17 KO2. I know the next upgrade will be duel battery followed by front bumper and rear w/ Baja design lighting and of course winch. I’m just curious what you all think should be order of purchases and suggestions for suspension for the rugged terrain I’ll be facing.

I know some will say why you changing a new vehicle. Well because I have another and this is my play vehicle.

Make sure to get skids and sliders, truly those should come before a dual battery setup. You need to protect that soft underside.

Awesome advice!!! The only reason I said the dual battery was due to the light system on the bumper and rear end . But good stuff bro .

Depending on your weight you are carrying you might need to upgrade your leaf pack and spring rate. Especially with adding armor for the front, rear, sliders, skids, it all adds up quick.

If you plan on ordering a bumper or armour, I’d order that first. Can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks depending on the shop. Good luck with the build.

Not really. Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself and decide on.

    • Plate, tube, or hybrid bumpers
    • Steel or aluminum for the bumpers/ skids
    • How much weight will you normally be carrying on your trip
    • Are you looking for suspension travel or weight carrying capacity
    • Bed rack or topper
    • RTT (hard or soft) or ground tent (including hammock)
There are more things to consider as well but really do your homework and decide what you want for everything before you pull the trigger. You might regret it...

I should also mention that on board air and water are nice to have

Thanks for the info bro . A bit heart wrenching to know I’m gonna need to do a bit more suspension work. I’m curious I’ve seen others with what looks like dual suspension on the front axel. What is the purpose or use for this ?

    Not a problem man.

Those are for mail crawling and desert wheeling so you can hit whoops at speed.

Awesome bro!! Thanks for the advice this project is definitely gonna hit the bank. So I’m gonna get this suspension right before I start adding weight on. I know Icon has a secondary system for front and I’ll need a new control arm . Then I’m gonna redo the rear suspension with a stronger leaf spring for the added weight then work my way up with sliders to front and rear bumper and secondary battery setup. After that plates underneath for armor. Sound like a game plan ??? And of course pictures followed by onboard air system.

Sounds good, just make sure to pick what bumpers and armor you want first before you buy the suspension. I've never worked with her but Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road can get you hooked up right
