2017 OFF ROAD recovery advice

Hi,
First taco. 2017 Off road dbl cab short box. I drove Silverados for 17 years previously. used front hooks and rear tow ball with straps with the Silverados when stuck.
will use the reese hitch shackle for rear tow option. Took a peek under taco and it looks like a small hook and a hole on other side on the front. When stuck here it is typically in snow and will be a violent snatch strap jerk to get out. Is there a thread on options for snatch strap with taco OR? I saw ARB frame mount shackle thread. But is stock able to handle a decent snatch strap front recovery?

Also, looking for a 30' snatch strap. Most say tow strap online. Suggestions?

For the rear. Don't remember what I have for a strap.

I would not use the hook up front, unless it's a dire emergency. Get the ARB mounts, or get a Warn Semi-hidden bumper with proper recovery points.

For the rear, do not ever use the tow ball. They can snap off and becomes a flying projectile. Get a proper rear shackle mount. They can be had for fairly cheap.

 

Yeah, never attach a strp to a tow ball as they could shatter. Have never seen one do this personally, but it is best to get a shackle receiver like M603 posted or one like below:

There is a hook in the front, or you could go with an aftermarket front bumper like Phsycle posted.

This tacomaworld forum is awesome. Does that black taco with license plate covered have the Warn semi hidden bumper on it? Looks like a good great option with the bit of radiator protection (deer numbers up...). AND would be way easier for wife to hook strap up if she got stuck.

Good point about rear ball. Never thought about it becoming a cannon ball years ago. MANY crazy recoveries using it. But will switch to shackle mnt. Came across a logger who had a chain come thru rear window while pulling out a vehicle. Subdural hematoma, eventually died. So ya, the cannon tow ball would be worse!

Must say it is pretty chicken shit of Toyota to not have robust recovery points on a $36-38K OFF ROAD truck. Love the truck tho.

Yeah, few years ago, I saw a video (that was quickly taken down) in a foreign country where they were doing a recovery using the hitch ball. Snapped clean off and ended up killing some kid standing near by. Very sad. Recovery is a dangerous game.

I do miss the stout front recovery points I had with the F150. But there are plenty of options for the Tacoma. Yes, that's a Warn bumper. It's obviously got a winch mount as well.

 

For straps, I have two:

ARB snatch strap 17,636 lbs. rating
Bubba Rope 28,600 lbs. rating

I REALLY like the Bubba Rope and I use that whenever I go off pavement. The ARB I keep in the truck at all times.

 

There's also other clean designs, depending on what you want to spend. You can get them without winches if you like too.

seeing some say the 180lb warn bumper causes front to sag. they r adding bilstein shocks to prevent.

ok. know next to zero about them. 1st impression is great idea but if it came loose it might rip front bumper off while being pulled out etc. But if they make strong stuff it might be fine. I have a reese cargo basket thing, so it made me interested.

 

That option would be lighter and would be easier to use/hook up than the ARB mount. If you'll be regularly using it, that would be the better route. I don't, so if it were me, I would go with the cleaner look of the ARB. Can't lose either way, though.

 

Can that ARB point clear a stock bumper ?

 

There’s no reason why it should ever come loose. It installs using the same points as your aftermarket plate bumpers. As with anything, maintenance is important. We tell everyone to check bolts at intervals.

 

is the arb just one attachment point on pass side?

 

Second for the Mobtown recovery bar. I use mine with an 8000lb Warn winch on the front and if necessary I can pull the winch off the front and mount it on the rear.

On the back I use a Smittybuilt Beaver Step and a kinetic recovery rope.
