Can you not cut it before the axle and do a 90 degree side dump in front of the rear tire?

Judging by how much CHP enforces noise violations on Harleys, I'm betting not much.

I got failed a few years ago because I didn't have an up to date sticker on my K&N intake. Guy said he knows it's fine, but just call K&N to get a new sticker. ANother time I was failed because I had wrapped my intake tube to help keep the noise down and he couldn't see the serial number. I do wish CA was more concerned about emissions than this other piddly crap.

yeah, the reality is that CA is more concerned with making sure any modifications you have done meet CARB requirements so they can be sure they've gotten their money from the aftermarket companies, than they actually are with emissions. You can do whatever you want to your vehicle and make it a smog dumping, ozone layer depleting factory on wheels if you want....so long as the parts you installed were "CARB compliant" aka paid tens of thousands to the state for that license. It's getting ridiculous.

Prime example of that was the whole TRD supercharger versus Magnuson branded one...exact same supercharger yet one was legal for CA and the other wasn't (until recently when they got the CARB sticker for them).

Pretty sure you can...the rule just states that it has to 'exit the vehicle'. An axle dump therefore isn't allowed because it exits underneath the vehicle. Not sure why that matters for emissions but it probably just has more to do with them not wanting people to cut off portions of the exhaust equipment.

Also...I thought about doing it that way and having it exit in front of the wheel, but that would put it directly behind the slider kickout...which I understand should protect it most of the time but it still puts it in a spot where it can get crushed by a rock in the right circumstance. Better than the stock location though for sure.

Only thing I wish my truck didn't have (wanted the J-shift instead) but I think they only offered the push button 4x4 on the 04s...well that and I wanted a double cab but couldn't get that with the manual trans on 1st gens.

The push button is still far better than the turn dial/knob 4x4 on the 05+ though...aesthetically anyway. I'm sure reliability-wise they aren't really any different.

My 5 speed shifter gets super hot in the summertime when on the highway or long trips (just the metal part). Like, so hot you can't hold your fingers to the metal for more than a few seconds. It's always been like that. Only happens when temps outside are in the mid 90's or higher though.

Pretty sure my buddy with an '03 double cab had a push button.

And yeah, the knob thing on my '17 4Runner kinda sucks. I was out with the fam in Great Basin NP, and there are some dirt roads/trails around that I wanted to explore. The thing had quite a time going in and especially out of 4lo and even 4hi. At least with a shifter you can kind feel when it'll go in our out of 4lo.

That said, I'd like to put the 5 speed auto trany from the 4Runner into my Taco. Would be a nice compromise between an auto (no clutch work needed) and a manual (better control of gearing).

I think @BartMaster1234 would probably know if it was offered through 04...I stopped trying to memorize what the different options and trims were for 1st gens because it seems like it was all over the place lol.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of threads where people get all blue in the face arguing that they are so cock sure that XYZ option was never available on ABC year, only for someone to post "yeah I got that on mine".

It's not because of the temp inside the cab, it's the ambient temp outside that heats it up from outside.

Also tinting your windows in CA is technically not legal, ask me how I know (I was one of the unlucky ones that got busted for it). Mine weren't even that dark, you could still see through them. Had to get it removed then prove it to a judge in traffic court.

J-Shift was offered throughout 2004 IIRC. Push-Button was just standard instead.
