Can a dealer "install" the convenience package?

Basically, i'm looking at getting a 2010 Tacoma, 5-speed 4 cyl access cab. However, i'm very limited in my selection (for whatever reason) and the dealer came across one that's exactly what i'm looking for... save the convenience package (cruise control, keyless entry, sliding rear window).

My question, can a dealer install these? I know the cruise control would be pretty easy, i've seen a writeup on it, but what about the sliding rear window?

 

For what the dealer will charge you, I would either go without or go aftermarket. Keyless can be added via a alarm/remote starter. Cruise can be done DIY. It is just that window that would be a pain.

 

See i don't really care about the keyless part, i'd just really like the window and cruise control. Put it this way, i have about 1200 in buyers surplus to spend on this.

Aftermarket parts in some cases (like the radio) can be far superior to OEM...

the rear window isnt very hard to switch. you can find a diy write-up online or any local auto glass shop should be able to do without a problem. If I were you I would try and stay away from the dealer when its possible.

 

Are they gonna carry the parts? What about the cruise control?

And why exactly should i avoid the dealer, besides price?

 

I installed a sliding window and it was a piece of cake.

 

So why is the dealer one to avoid? i mean, i know it'll be a bit pricey but should i be worried about "quality"?

 

should get those options at MSRP or better. Dealer knows what you want, and is willing to install it to your liking. I doubt you will get any decent price. Cars.com with a 200+ mile radius will probably find close to if not exactly what you are looking for.

Find another dealer who doesn't think they get away with ripping you off for overpriced factory options.

 

Trust me, i've exhausted online searches. That's why i've moved to searching dealers.

Anyways, i look at it this way: I was willing to spend the extra ~1,200 for the convenience package, but a dealer has found me one w/o it so it's that much cheaper.

So, if i'm to AVOID the dealer, where can i find the parts and what is it gonna run me to get them on my own and take it to a shop to get it done?

 

If the dealer wants a sale==========HE WILL FIND YOUR VEHICLE. If he doesnt, its simple go to another one.

 

That's what i figured, but my search criteria is very specific... and because it's so late into the year, it's harder to find that "brand new" one, ya know?

Apparently, this is really hard to find cause i've been on the search for a few months now.

 

you can get the keyless entry/alarm combo at any local stereo shop. Just gotta tell them you want to get the auto door "poppers" installed so you can have auto locking/unlocking doors. A cheap alarm/keyless entry combo should be around 300 +install. A really good high end alarm/keyless entry will be around 550+install. the price depends on the distance you want to remote to work from and what brand you decide to go with.

the rear window can be swapped out and you can sell the solid one piece rear for $ to go toward the new one. Im not sure of the price but I live on oahu and you can call ace auto glass 847-3217 and get the price for the sliding rear installed. then you can do the cruise control yourself and you got your convenience package. or if you want why dont you custom order a truck? if a dealer does not have what you want in-stock thats usually what you do, but you might have to wait another month for it to be ready.

 

They don't do that anymore. It's especially too late in the year for me to do that now, i'd be better off waiting for the 2011 (which i don't have the time to wait for).

But thanks for the advice everyone, it doesn't seem to be as difficult as i would have imagined.

HOWEVER, i'm still curious about having the dealer install the cruise and rear glass. I mean, wouldn't i have more "peace of mind" because they are liable? I know it may be pricey but maybe not because the guy i'm working has been extremely down to earth and hasn't really been acting like a dealer at all. Anyways, is it price that i should be worried about when going to the dealer?

So should any glass or auto shop carry those pieces? Or am i gonna have to order them OEM?

Based on your comments you seem to want the dealer to do it, so why not just call them and ask what the price OTD to get those items added to the truck. Then you will not have to worry about forum guess. If what they tell you is within your approved price range, you will be happy. If not then you need to consider your options.

 

I've installed both the cruise control and alarm on past toyotas - I got an OEM alarm off of ebay for one, it was just plug and play since it was oem. I found the information on the cruise control on the internet, and was able to order the oem part off of some website that sold car parts. It was around $50 or so and literally just plugged into a socket. i had to disassemble part fo the steering wheel which was simple. you'd have to poke around the internet.

the windows are easy to install, you could probably find instructions somewhere on the net, or hire someone to put it in.

 

reson to stay away from the dealer is price. put it this way I just put some toyo m/t's on my truck, the dealer wanted over 2,000 dollars, the tire store I ended up going to only charged me 1,183.

what you should do is order the rear sliding window once you buy the new truck, it will be in stock at the dealers parts department. then take it to an auto glass shop and have them switch it out, then sell the solid rear window to get some of your money back. simple as that.

 

If you don't mind me asking, where exactly could i find the rear window? Are you saying at the dealer where i got the truck? I figure if that was the case they'd overcharge me.
