2017 OFF ROAD recovery advice

yes, I believe it. got pulled out during a blizzard in '14. Was a dirty jerk with a chain. Lost my 40' of strap somehow. Definitely need a kinetic rope or strap cause when icy or deep snow the pulling vehicle sometimes has to do a running jerk.

 

The passenger side hook is a tow hook not a recovery hook. Its not meant to be yanked on hard but pulled on gently and consistently. The loop on the driver side is ONLY meant as a tie down point and nothing else. It will rip off pretty easily. With that said I have used a tie down loop and towed a car using it, it was our only option and he needed a very very light pull and I still dont recommend ever using it in that method. Even a light tug could rip it off.

 

thanks. So one should get an aftermarket hook replacement if yanking outta snowbanks etc? This is a weak sauce move by Yota putting one weak point on the front. And it seems to be just two bolts on the crossmember and not the frame (the hook)?

 

Yes I would get a better recovery point for snatching. I dont think you can really blame toyota. They built a capable truck for weekend exploring not a full rock crawler or baja truck. Is the hook not on the frame? I thought it was on the frame but I installed a SSO Slimline with proper recovery points and a winch about 6 months after I got the truck.

Toyota lists the hook on the passenger side of off road models as a tow hook.

 

That hook looks good enough for some extraction work.

 

My recommendation for a snatch strap is the SE Overland Kinetic Recovery Rope. Similar to a Bubba Rope, but Steve and the guys at SEO are awesome and know their stuff. There are a few to choose from and they’re very reasonably priced.

False. I've seen that hook bend straight. The safest recovery is a closed system I.e. d-rings

interesting. i thought it looked good initially also. but several say they have seen them fail. Does the one in the pic attach with 2 oem holes and a third, all on the cross member?

 

What is that setup on the quicksand? Brand? I'm looking for a low profile and not-too-heavy solution, and this looks like IT.

Yep, tried that. I figured I’d ask! I’m leaning towards the d ring solution you recommend (thanks, BTW). I doubt I’ll ever need it but mostly wanted something better than what I have that also looks better.

 

I have the RCI front skid. Looks like it would work, but no guarantees. I know some people have that tow point, but the design looks lacking IMO. I know it’s affordable though, so that’s a tough call. If you can swing more cash, I’d go with something else though.
