I know this is going to stir things up, and not really on-topic, but I was just contemplating how much of a burden/boon it would be to the GDP if abortions were outlawed.

    - Would there be a deficit caused by the lack of paying doctor's procedures? Or would there be a surplus because of sales of baby formula and cribs?

    - Would the schools be overrun by a surge in population, or would the increase create more teaching positions and competition?

    - Would people who have abortions for career concerns not reach as high of a position as they do now, and thus eliminate qualified people from the workforce and increased spending associated with a higher income bracket; or would the influx of child-bearing professionals cause a nation-wide restructuring of corporate management to retain the best-performing individuals regardless of parental status?

Or will it all just even out in the end?

    Hmmm.....

Sure, as long as it doesn't result in aborted fetuses.

DAMN! That is what I was getting at. The stem cell research uses the left over fetuses the get thrown in the trash any way. At least they were created to help others.

I would think a SLIGHT deficit due to the HUGE expence that a child cost, so the parents would have less money to spend. The rest of it prolly would balance out, IMO.

    Isn't that what's happening now?

I'd say that the majority of people today who elect to have an abortion are closer to being able to afford raising a child.

People who cannot afford to have children generally cannot afford an abortion either. And so the cycle continues.

Not to get us into darker waters, but given the current setup of the Welfare system, there is actually no incentive in not having more children, as you receive a greater stipend and abortions cannot be federally funded.

I had a girlfriend once who's idea was that if you went on Welfare, you should have one of those time-release birth-control implants inserted. Once you could afford the $200 to remove the birth-control, you could have a child.

Drastic, yes. But it kinda makes sense.

There is no 100% guaranteed way to have safe sex. Both condoms and birth control can fail.

Not only that, but would you rather a couple or individual have a baby they are not financially able to take care of, or they don't want so they end up abusing/neglecting it?

Easy to say pro life based on what you think are morals and religious views.... but unless any of us are in the situation, we never really know what we are.

I've found that the reverse is also true. I've known people who always said they would have an abortion if they got pregnant, then when it happened, they couldn't go through with it.

It's very easy for people to be led by their "moral compass." What is not easy is to remember that no everyone's moral compass points the same direction yours does -- and that it is not necessarily a bad thing.

Yeah, that's true, but it helps in preventing the baby being conceived.

I would hope that a couple not financially able to take care of a child would not have unprotected sex in the first place, like I said atleast double up on rubbers if you absolutely have to.

I just wonder what makes the taking of an unborn childs life more morally reprehensible than the killing of children in Iraq and Afghanistan. All life is precious but lets not have a double standard and certainly not force personal beliefs on someone else unless you have walked a mile in their shoes.

Well said OCTACO...I hate when people use the bible to justify shoving there views on others, especially when they are not stepping up to the plate and offering to take the new born and raise it. Dont tell someone they cant because you wont. Its the choice of the potential future parents. Why ruin the lives of 3 for the price of 1.

Agreed, only that I dont think anyone is ok with killing children in Iraq, that's just what happens when youre at war.
