Thinking about swapping out from the stock to something a little brighter. Don’t think I want to go LED/HID. I’ve seen some members running the Phillips bulbs. I looked some up but quite a range of colors/brightness. Never upgraded headlights before so educate me.

Let’s see some suggestions and hopefully some night pictures.

I did PIAA bulbs. I like em, but I only have 9500 miles on my truck so no info on longevity.

I'll be honest with you. Don't waste your money on anything at the local parts store. Buy Philips WhiteVision bulbs. They last so much longer and do not yellow as quickly. The output for me has been better than the Ultras I had before.

If you want to stay halogen but want much better lighting, do the H9 retrofit. The H9 is a much better bulb and it fits with a slight modification of the retention tabs on the bulb.

I'm a fan of the Philips X-TremeVision bulbs myself. I've had way better life out of them than Silverstars in the past and they're on par for output.

I have run the Sylvania Silverstar Ultras in my previous 4runner and now my Taco. Have had great luck with them and they have lasted a long time for me.

So it sounds like philips xtremes or sylvania silverstars are the favorites. Hoping for a some more night pictures of these. Obviously not expecting HID performance but for $30 why not make the stock lighting better.

The Phillips are very good. Much better than stock. Won't last as long but easy to change out. Just make sure you don't get bulbs with the blue coating over the entire capsule. Sure, it's raises the Kelvin but also considerably lowers the lumens as well.

I was curious about running H9's so I bought a couple (same bulb as your high beam), ground down the upper tab and installed just one. Now remember that the H9 is *basically* the same as an H11 but 65W vs 55W for the H11. So I had one Phillips H11 and on Phillips H9. Projected on my garage door and then measured with a Minolta Flashmeter 6 using the incidence metering mode in various areas of both beams and there was not a meaningful difference between the two. Everything within 1/10th of an f/stop between the two. I was pretty sure they looked the same visually but by actual measurement they really were. But the proof was driving back from Idyllwild last week at midnight on a dark mountain highway with no lighting: Those Phillips bulbs are more than adequate and they measure just over 3400 Kelvin on a Sekonic C700U color meter.

This is what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQWQN1Q/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Sylvania Silverstar Ultras. Sylvania and Osram are or used to be part of the same company. I've also seem Osram stamped on PIAA, Hella, and Phillips bulbs, so at best, you're getting second-best from those brands. The Silverstar Ultras are the most luminous bulbs they make. The ZXEs have a nice color, but it comes at a cost to brightness and longevity due to the coating on the bulbs.

Interesting, most people have said the Phillips are better.

I'm not saying that all of Phillips' bulbs are made by Osram, nor am I suggesting that Phillips doesn't make a better, brighter bulb. The Ultras are the best bulb, in my opinion, that Sylvania makes, and I've never had one fail. Interesting side note, my factory bulbs were stamped with Osram, Made in Germany. Other than the color temp, the apparent brightness seemed nearly identical to the Ultras that I bought to replace them. Our factory headlights are very bright.

I've used the SilverStars in the past, and haven't been disappointed.

I haven't even driven my taco in the dark yet......

I'm more concerned with trying to find a good selective yellow H11 for the foglights.....

I used silverstars before in a previous vehicle. I don't think they lasted 6 months, one side failed about a month before the other. I also feel initially the output was better, but quickly faded. I definitely wasn't a fan.

I went with Hella for my fog lights. They project a lower, wider, flat beam that does not bleed into my headlight beams. I can't swear that these are the exact ones as I'm not at home to verify, but it'll give you some idea.

I do question their durability, but I've had them for a year with no issues.

Nokya Hyper Yellow fog lights are my go to on all my vehicles. I’ve never had one fails and the yellow light it puts out is second to none, color wise.
