    Article from Angie's List -

An OEM windshield is certified by the Department of Transportation for meeting industry safety standards and is virtually identical to the one the manufacturer made.

An aftermarket windshield can cost several hundred dollars less than OEM windshields. These glassmakers don’t have contracts with dealers and the glass may vary slightly from the original glass, such as having a different thickness level, tint level or fewer features.

Well damn. I've got a first gen and I've had a rock chip on my windshield since 2011, never sealed and it never spread. I also do a lot of highway driving. Hope things work out for y'all!

I havent had any bad luck with the tacoma but i did have my windshield replaced on my q50 at safelite. Pilkington glass was used and its been over a year and no issues at all. I guess all of the issues mentioned are a hit or miss. Or i am just really lucky

I realize this is an old thread someone brought back to life, but the OP seriously needs to consider moving where people don’t throw stones at his windshield as he sleeps out of jealously if his new truck or whatever the heck is going on here.

@Sean73T did you ever speak to corporate? Any further luck since you’ve last reported?

That’s not entirely true even aftermarket glass has to meet the same standards as OME glass. And a majority of OEM glass is made by the same companies that makes aftermarket glass. If you still have the OEM in your truck and you look at the bug in the corner it’ll say something along the lines of TOYOTA and directly under it will say PILKINGTON which is a aftermarket glass company who supplies OEM for Toyota.

Thanks. Good insider info. Most companies in Phoenix theses days are offering $100-$200 cash back with install.

Didn't bother with corporate. Truck was totaled shortly after this post. So it needed more than a windshield.

Sometime in the mid/late 2000s (I'm guessing), windshield manufacturing processes changed from the hardened barely get a chip in the glass to softer/polymer sandwich layer safety glass.
Shamelite qouted me $197 for theirs, $640 for OEM their cost.

First laminated windshield was in the 1930's. By the 1950's it all was laminated. The plastic came soon after. Again, I have been driving for 40 years. Every vehicle I have had since the 1970's pitted, chipped, broke and cracked. I do think the windshields now are a bit thinner.

My OEM glass got a 4 inch spider crack in it from a rock that was about 1/2in in width.

I had my glass guy put in a PINKERTON windshield that also had the GOPRO mount.

Last week, a rock that was about TWO INCHES in width bounced up and hit my windshield. I was almost POSITIVE that i was gonna be getting another windshield. To my surprise, it wasnt even phased...

    +1 for PINKERTON

I have 23k on my 2017 and my second windshield is already broke. I have found that ma and pa shops will negotiate, I paid $145 for the last 1. The problem is simply that the glass is too thin for weight reduction.

I am curious of those that have had multiple replacements, were the new ones Toyota or aftermarket?
