Hey, so I have a friend who can get Dorman parts for me for free or at least a deep discount. have you guys had any experience with Dorman products before? are they decent quality? I'm guessing most people never heard of them before.

Dorman comes in handy when no one else would make components available. Their quality is good enough, and sometimes the only choice. They do their research and homework. Again, at times they are THE ONLY provider of a new component, but a good component.

Yes they are trash.Example: Their(Dorfman) wheel studs are .010 over (at the splines) in diameter and will not fit properly in your hub( at least on the rear). You'll be beating on them till the cows come home and still they won't fit.( They were also about 3 threads to short compared to OEM).Avoid them like the plague.Pick a Part OEM item is the only way to go(4 Runner is the same)2 cents worth.

What he said...I just did a Tundra brake swap and ended up needing long wheel studs. Bought 12mm-1.5 x 44mm long DORMANS. They looked good till I tried to install them. The knurled area was .010" oversized and would not fully press in. I was able to turn them down to OEM size. So yes the studs worked but a PITA.

are you asking about Dorman parts generally or are you asking about a specific part? Like what was mentioned above sometimes it is the only affordable choice. I have used them when it was necessary.

im asking more generally. I have no need for any parts right now but in the future, if I needed to get something replaced I didn't know if I should use Dorman or pay for something else.

Dorman is one of the biggest aftermarket parts companies out there. They specialize in oddball parts hence the name (dealer only or reman'd) and are very cheap. They used to be a us company making quality shit. I've used plenty of parts fixing friends cheap cars, have not had many issues. Had a vvt solenoid that was defective once but that's it in my limited experience. They had a good warranty when I sold them. That being said if it were my own truck I'd go oem or better, I see the appeal when working on a cheapo car tho

good to know thanks! I would love to put only the best on my truck but sometimes I can't afford to. Ill def be cautious when thinking about using a Dorman part in the future.

So just a quick compare on a fuel tank for an 09 rav4. Oem is right around 1000. Spectra premium is 635 on RA. And dorman is all over interwebz around 300. Is it as good as oem? No. But if you are replacing the part it's because oem failed. I dunno lots hate but I certainly see the appeal for many projects

It's because Denso/oem make quality parts. Aftermarket? Its a crap shoot in that department... I think most of bought Toyota's because of their reliability?

I think everyone on here is confusing Dorman with Cardone. Dorman makes quality stuff and their OE Solutions improves on an OEM design flaw. I'd bet 99% of people on here who say their stuff is garbage says OEM is better which obviously isn't true. The parts that dorman is going to make is the stuff that's worth setting up tooling for.
