Differential Problem

Hey guys, so I just bought a 2006 DC Long Bed 4x4 the other day. I took it over to the local toyota dealer to have it checked out to make sure everything was working properly. Everything seemed to be in perfect condition except for one thing about the differential. Heres what he said, "left shaft feels loose where it enters front differential and the seal is leaking. possible bushing damage or bearing damage. He is not sure but know for sure its going to have to be replaced. So the place I had bought the truck from said they would pay for all the fixes. Just wanted to know some more information on this problem like what are possible ways it could have happened? After it's fixed, whats the aftermath like? And any other info or thoughts on this would be much appreciated. I would post pics of the truck but its in the shop.

4WD drive engages, but cannot be driven with it on is what my guy said.

 

Seal is leaking. Not really any noise.

 

you dont want to drive on the road with truck in 4wd anyway. rough on the drive line. x2 on the fact that seals can just go bad...

 

well yeah i know not to drive with on road lol. just the fact you gonna drive with it anywhere on was the case. thanks for the info so far.

I drive on the road in 4x4 sometimes. just on straight aways (highways) with little to no turns. And I don't go above 65.

 

yup me too, i only engage it when its raining and the roads are slick, and i dont have to make any turns. I never really take it off road as its too new and pretty so the system would never have been broken in and lubed well.

 

He's saying there's movement on the shaft too. Usually a sign of abuse. Hard to say, though. They'll be able to see the condition of the rest of the diff when they replace the bearing.
Don't drive 4x4 on dry pavement. Even straight. The tires don't give, so the driveline does. Eventually something will fatigue and fail. Probably the chain in the xfer case.

go to a toyota dealership and check a new tacoma. i think youll find the shaft feels like it has alot of play. my 2010 does too... its just a toyota thing lol fjs do it too

 

He had it to a dealer. If he had a good tech, the tech would know when it's toast.

 

or its out of waranty and he wants some work... im just saying compare to another truck...not to hard. A tech told me i couldnt put synthetic in my auto LSD so...dont believe anything they say...

Let them fix the leak or bearing... then just use the truck... there is no real way to prevent that stuff. if the dealer fixes it they usually offer a warranty on their product and work so dont worry about it.

 

I agree on everything but the synthetic in diff. Some synthetic doesn't work even with the additive. It'l chatter. Saw a post on Amsoil severe gear oil. He says it works. That's what's going in my diffs, trans and xfer case soon. I already have Amsoil in my engine.

 

Hey guys. Okay I bought the truck at a used car place not a toyota dealer. Took to the toyota dealer to have it checked out. The used car place has master mechanics and said he would have his guys fix since it would be a lot more expensive for him to do it at a dealer. He said he would use all brand new toyota parts and show me all the receipts and document and said I could even bring it back to the dealer to have them check it out again. I do have a five year warranty on it, but since it was a pre existing problem the warranty doesn't cover it. Thanks for more info. keep it coming.
