Vehicles should be driving at or near same speed as traffic as long is safe to do so. Cop can ticket you for going slower if deemed unsafe aswell. Reckless driving would be 15mph+ over the speed limit.

28,000 miles and average 21mpg on most full ups. 4cyl though. Used to get 24-25mpg when I took the back roads way toto work as speed limit is 55mph. I think that's typically the speed sweet spot for mpg.

I think there are two conversations gping on in this thread, so it may seem confusing for some.

I see that there are folks (like me) that are generally impressed with the realized mpgs from the Gen 3 Tacoma. Not everyone is hypermileing to achieve said mpgs. Just doing what they have always done, with driving habits the same as previous vehicles.

Second topic rolling around here has to do with highway speeds and who is right and who is wrong. If the posted speed limit is 65, drive 65. No need to go 75 just because you feel that you will lose part of your day somehow. If it is posted 55, drive 55, again no reason to 65 for the same reason.

No cop will pull you over for going the posted speed limit regardless of how fast everyone else is driving around you. The courts will side with what is posted. Speeders, don't kid yourself with your silly justifications.

Possibly. Without specific data to support that, it would be speculation.

In a court of law, “flow of traffic” doesn’t mean squat. Either you were speeding or you weren’t. Trust me, I know from experience by getting to separate speeding tickets from the same prick cop citing me for being 6 and 3 miles over the speed limit in his beat. I lost both times in court. And yes, his own dept hates him because he gives the rest of them a bad name.

My point is that most cops only go after the most serious offenders.

I've generally got no issue with people who drive slow, I just don't get how you do it.

    200 miles doing 70 takes 2hrs 51mins. 200 miles doing 55 is 3hrs 42mins.

That's a significant difference, even if you aren't in a hurry it's worth it to me to sacrifice a small amount of fuel economy to spend that time doing something else. I'd imagine people who do 55 in a 65 have never worked a 12hr day then had a 300 mile drive home.

Whats to get? Just drive. If you plan your day properly, there is no reason for being in a hurry. 2 hours, 3 hours, 6 hours, I'll get there when I get there, and enjoy the ride, the view, and whatever?

I work 12hr days and live within 23 mins of work (Intel). I drive the back roads and take my sweet ass time. I get to work roughly 40 mins before my shift starts so I can read up on what I am walking into.
Actually, I have a buddy that I commute with. We just take turns driving. We don't do it for the gas savings, we don't do it for the carbon foot print, we just chat and plan our upcoming outings. We metal detect together for an hour or so after work each day in the fall/winter, and camp, kayak fish, and ride ATV's in the summer together with our families.

I don't understand why someone would have a 300 mile commute. That makes no sense to me.

When you sort by Sport and Off Road on Fuelly for 2017 model year you see this:

    Off Road: 18.6 mpg
    Sport: 19.06 mpg

These averages are based on over half million miles each so that's not a ton but still decent sample size.

The off-road and Sport have different EPA ratings... so yeah.... research was done

Also the sport has the wind deflector under the bumper and Off-road doesn’t majority of the difference is going to be because of that

My attitude is that time is money and creeping along is letting things pass me that the difference in a few pennies isn't worth the wait. FWIW, I am typically in the 85mph plus range on the highway and getting 19mpg.
Please do us a favor and keep in the right hand lane.
