I spent about $500 having my driveshaft rebuilt with a new carrier bearing and dc joint. Solved all of my problems with take off vibes.

I can’t imagine it would be that much more with some new tube.

Going this route just copies the first gen taco

Where does the carrier bearing go with your one piece shaft? Or did you stick with two piece but just add the dc joint?

    It’s a two piece with a dc joint.79C8E9AC-29A8-4482-AACB-194BEC097DA7.jpg

Front stayed the same. Rear got flipped, and shortened for the dc joint. This setup is made possible by using 1980s Jeep transfer case output shaft parts

With a one piece you loose the carrier bearing completely. The dc seems add about $100 to the price from my research.

It looks like your dc is between the carrier bearing and the rear diff correct? Not between the tc and the carrier bearing?

Yep, between the bearing and diff. The front portion of the shaft was not changed, just a new flange attached

Interested, these trails have been on my list for some time. Have you figured out the days you will run things?

Given Cottonwood pass still being closed are you coming in from Aspen side?

Yes, MSV is Middle Saint Vrain. It is easy to moderate. Some would call it easy, some would call it moderate. I would call it moderate personally. The gate keeper is the very first obstacle and it will let you know if you should be there or not.

Hmm...I was going to come up the Crested Butte side given the order I was originally thinking. I forgot Cottonwood was closed, though. Let me reevaluate my maps and I'll get back to you.

Thanks! I actually drove up there yesterday just to check it out and there was a long line of Tacomas prepping to go up MSV.

Yep, around 9am. I would have stopped if I didn’t have somewhere else to be. Maybe next time.

Yeah...I'm thinking starting in Aspen makes more sense as it will likely be faster to get there. And by the end of it, we'll probably be too damned tired to get home via 50/285. Google Maps is reading that at this exact hour it would take almost an hour longer going through Gunnison. I can imagine that on Saturday it will be far worse.

Now the question is: which direction to go in? I like the idea of starting at Pearl and then ending on Taylor. On the other hand, it may be kind of cool to "earn" Pearl and do it on the last day. BUT...ending on Pearl Pass may be a bit much as a bookend. Plus, Taylor Pass seems to be quite a bit shorter, which is always good for a last-day trail.

Yeah, I drove around (through Gunnison) for a fly fishing trip and it adds over an hour and around 50 miles to trip.
