I didn't want to vote since I don't have a 3rd gen. What does the poll show for "NO" votes?

    a bunch of liars ;)

Seriously though. The party line from Toyota is that its normal. As you know normal means: usual, typical, or expected. This howl is usual, typical, and expected behavior of the 3rd gen Tacoma. If people voted no, they have a truck that isn't normal or they dont hear it or they dont care.

Maybe my tinnitus is the same frequency and I wouldn't hear it. Damn, I have that new truck itch.

Just go in with eyes and hears open!

The biggest problem with the howl is that it isn't necessarily present when the truck is new. Mine started really early (~300 miles) and got progressively worse over time. Some guys didn't start hearing it until 12K miles. I think someone even said they didn't hear it until 25K+.

I had a bunch (~12) of loaners over the course of my Tacoma ownership. Only 1 truck didn't howl (yet).

So did you get the TSB with the new mounts with isolators and you still had whine?

I received the TSB items (mounts, isolators, etc) and the service manager said it still whined, but not as much. The Toyota rep told them to swap out the third member. So it will be an all new third (gears, locker, bearings, etc) hopefully today.

Ironically I just heard from my dealer. They replaced the diff with a new unit and it still whines. So now it has a new diff and the TSB parts... They are going back to Toyota to see what is next. He said they had something on the diff to isolate noises, he had a term for it see where the noise is coming from, and there were no noises in the wheel bearings. I suggested carrier bearing or transfer case.... He said he would let me know what they say..

Mine has the whine at accel/decel around 58-61 mph, but not under load.

Definitely will. Pisses me off as I had it in the shop twice two weeks ago to get this taken care of and they magically couldn't hear it. Now, the week that I have to travel, I may be stuck without a vehicle.. May just tell them to keep it and give me the new 4runner off-road on their lot. haha

This is frustrating for sure. Don’t let them stick you in a Corolla. Tell them you are traveling and need more room.

And to add to a little more info, forgot to add it before. The Service Manager said "Well it could be a wind noise issue.." Um, wind noise that is affected by the gas pedal? haha I am not buying it....

Being that my truck is a shortbed, the TSB only covered the body mounts with isolators. From my understanding, the long beds get new rear springs as well.

Nope, you have it reversed. LBs only get mounts and insulation.

Oh wow. I asked the Service Manager if they changed the springs too and he told me they are only needed on the longbeds. Hmm...

I came on today to look at another thread I was posting in and noticed this title. My 18 OR access cab does this and believe I have been experiencing the mysterious whine noise from the rear end. Sounds like wind going through a flute on decel? .......... Does TSB-0013-18 apply to me also ???

Yup. New springs and the dampener on both sides.

I had my rear diff replaced at around 5000 miles (I'm at 25K now). Unfortunately the second diff made the noise considerably worse. I'm thinking I got a rebuilt or a take out from someone else after they determined there was nothing wrong with it... except the howl.

Anyway if I'd kept my first diff I think the TSB would have been sufficient to quiet the noise to tolerable levels. As of now the TSB just took the noise back to the level of my first diff.

Well, the manager stated they swapped the body mounts, but nothing else as my VIN was not covered since it is newer.

You have to compare your VIN in the TSB to see if it is covered.

That really sucks to hear... I mentioned the carrier bearing and possible t-case bearings to the manager, but he wasnt real receptive. That is when he said it could be wind noise. I dont buy the wind noise since it can be replicated with the gas pedal... Unless on accel/decel the springs are flexing in a way that they grab air and make noise. Hence the earlier model spring swap.
The VIN's listed in the TSB are #HXxxxxxx and mine is a #JXxxxxxx. (built late Dec 2017)

Hope I am not being that guy messing up the threat with too many posts.

Just got a call from the service manager and they got a new truck in today that someone ordered. They said it does it whines even worse than mine does and saying this is a normal trait of the truck. :(

Luckily it is on my records if something does go wrong. Maybe it is time to give Toyota a call.

My Dealership just called, parts are ordered and they’ll do the TSB tomorrow morning. I’m hoping this will quiet the howl.

Talked to some GM performance truck gearheads, and they supposed that the whine is pinion gear backlash resonance caused by tiny imperfections in the pinion shims, a la this video. I wonder if a specialist manufacturer (*ahem* ECGS *ahem*) would be able to test the various sizes and settings and save the day the way they did to replace the Tacoma driveshaft needle bearing with a sturdy clamshell one.
