I also see that you have not painted your sliders yet and they are starting to surface rust? :boink:

You certainly can replace the part, it's $180-$200 depending on where get it. But it will happen again if you wheel your truck and/or have big tires.

Way more others who have done this mod long before I have. Some people with no welder access usese roll pins but I don't agree with that. I would rather use a brass shear pin but I did not feel like machining one & my lathe is buried right now. Tack welds is much quicker & easier.

I'm not recommending to do this mod, it's up to owner of the truck. But I'm not worried about it. In a minor accident it's not going to do anything. It's designed to collapse in a major accident in which my opinion will still happen.

I flew a car off a cliff at 95 mph when I was a teen & was lucky to be ok. I didn't get hurt at all, steering column still in tact, didn't even feel the air bag.

if you hit something hard enough for that shit to smash your body in, I think your fucked regardless. Amirite?

Hated hat slop. I welded the whole thing. My tack welds broke from wheeling (yea, I hammer down ;) )

I did mine, just two tiny tack welds. In my '04, there is a massive metal area, where the tilt wheel moves, above this slip joint, that is certainly going to cause my tacks to break first. As noted, some have drilled and inserted roll pins. I would probably prefer either brass or a shear pin. A machinist and I also discussed using a hydraulic press, and putting a dimple on each of the flats to tighten the joint back up. (It is two six sided areas where one slides inside the other.) I would probably have gone this route, had I not already welded them. I consider it the best low-dollar mod that I have ever made to my truck. It takes the constant back and forth correction away, particularly when traveling on the highway.

Yup, I agree, gotta hit really hard for that steering column shaft to puncture through & then through your body. Pretty sure other parts of you would be more f'd up before that steering column shaft hurts you.

Most do 2 welds, I tack welded every other flat so 3. I can't wheel as hard as you guys so I should be good. Yup that mod was one of the best things I have done to the truck.

Go back to your second gen sections haha I know you secretly agree with me on the best gen, you seem to be trolling our thread.

The longer you wait the worse it will be to remove the rust. Looks like you already have a bit of sanding to deal with. :boink:

That's how I do it lol. The other guy was asking if he could only do one side. Ive got mine setup decent but will be changing here soon once I go full width and outboard the shocks.

I’m doing local myself, why pay shipping if you can pick up. SOS Concepts is driving distance and guys around here speak really highly of his products, plus he’s going to weld them on for me since I have no welding experience.

Draw up some plans and take em to a local fab shop if you cant weld yourself. If your doing weld on its pretty straight forward. I did bolt on and it took a ton of trial and error to find what worked, especially on the drivers side with the brake lines there.

I keep telling myself I’m not going back to the oilfield without a degree.

This summer gave me many reasons.
