Tie rod end and alignment

I need to replace my left tie rod end before I go to Moab in 4 days. I know you are supposed to get an alignment done after replacing, but I'm wondering if I should wait until after Moab to have it done. I feel like it might be a waste after doing some moderate wheeling. I have to drive about 250 miles to get there.

 

You could set the toe yourself if you feel comfortable. There’s an awesome thread on here about it. I’ve done it and it’s not too bad!

bring new one with you and the tools to change it if needed

they can last a while even loose a bit

 

You can change it in 5 minutes. Back off the lock nut 1/2 turn, unscrew the tie rod, install new one, tighten 1/2 turn. I'd do both sides since one is already out. Get an alignment after your trip, especially if it's been quite a while with a lot of wheeling and miles.

 

By chance do you know the size or the jam nut? I went to change my old one out and the jam nut was missing (not on the other side though). I have seen someone say 16x1.5, but haven't seen a second source.

Damn I don’t know the thread size, but I know it’s 22mm and the tie rod is 21mm

 

I ended up getting the jam nut from the dealer. Asked them if it was a standard nut type and they said no. So dealer or bust pretty much. Unless it comes with your tie rod kit.

 

Tie rod just comes with the castle nut
