I was hoping with the quicksand coming out, there would have been an OD green offered as an actual choice, and I would have jumped at that one.

I don't know why I find this so funny. Or why I haven't been able to stop laughing for 20 minutes.

The Gambler was almost an epic fail. The DNR got a bit upset that the start point was planned on a pull out of an FS road. Since there were more than 75 folks, they wanted permits even though the event was free. There were threats of arrest and such. We found that it went multi agency when a statie pulled up to talk with the big bunch of folks hanging out, mostly quietly, at the Enumclaw Safeway. He was incredibly nice and warned us that he would be checking speed up the road a bit. I think he also gathered from the clan of folks that we weren't there to bog or race or be idiots. Essentially after that, nobody gave a hoot about the event. I guess it was just a misunderstanding, which is easy given the growth.

That situation did hose up the start and waypoints since no one was officially handing them out. Small groups met up and ran some gravel, stopped to help or watch others fix their shit, and generally tool along with a lot of BS. The route sheet ended up making the rounds viral-ly.

We did a good bit of the first day route taking into account the condition of the Error-Dynamic. Thankfully, I got nervy about leaving the Taco in Enumclaw. Finding and getting into the camp, which was an awesome spot on private land, proved a challenge. We had to do some rigging and gentle snatch strapping to get in:

    PANO_20180825_181924.jpg

    IMG_20180825_181848.jpg

The prop on the E-D was cracking out, so we removed it for safety. The E-D somehow made it the whole damn way with only the coolant cap dripping at bit. No fluids were added after leaving the start.

We ran most of the waypoints on Sunday, but bypassed the finish since it was about 7p by the time we got home. I goofed up and had my windows down while watching for issues getting to the camp. It was a ton of interior dust clean up before going to bed last night.

    Great event!

BTW, the t shirt was a friggin' hit and the event was discussed endlessly. There were a couple Growler jocks next to us for the overnight camp. The conversations were great.

That's awesome! Glad you had a riot of a time.

The part about permits and stuff is what keeps me away. As cool as it is, they are seriously toeing the line with a lot of organizations, and I'm not sure it won't bite them eventually.

They just need to start someplace other than federal land. The plan was to meet at a local brewery but the owners changed their mind at the last minute. I've only ran a couple events due to my own issues with break downs. The packs of folks are rarely more than two or three cars since folks are either teaming up with friends or choosing different routes to the way points.

The big thing that is making it better is that the OG folks in OR made it into a trail maintenance event. The folks who picked up the most trash wins. One of the sponsors down there gave away a shot gun to the folks who picked up the most casings. They had a 55gal drum full. That change in approach and the fact that most everyone is not being overtly stupid seems like a win to me. It is spilling over to the other Gamblers. There was a crew out of MT that had their bed full of trash getting into camp. The weight really helped their 2wd beast.

That's a great idea as a way to show goodwill. May have to spread that idea to some of the groups I hang out with.

People have been waiting almost 2000 years for Jesus to return. Least we can do is give Jimmy a year or so.
