You are wrong. Crawl Control is electronic and mechanical, at once. It is your 1st / 4lo, plus the added layer of computer modulated throttle control and braking.

Hey, I like the manliness and cache of MT as much as the next guy, but let’s be honest, no-one is flying a F22 without computers. There are cases when the computer does it better, and it’s ok to admit the failing of the human machine to keep up. Not a slight against your personal ability, you just don’t have the ability to feather throttle and braking, proportionality, independently, and simultaneously, to all 4 wheels, while monitoring torque and wheel slip, on all 4 corners, all at once. No one does.

On any true challenge you can think of, that might require it, CC will beat your pedal foot/feet, regardless of the terrain in your neighbourhood.

A vehicle under Crawl Control is being indexed up or down a hill. That’s the best way to think about it. It’s really funny to follow a vehicle using CC up a steep hill as the brake lights are on the whole time.

One of the reasons I bought a MT was the gearing.

What the heck? Diff ratios exactly opposite on the 4bangers?! Seems like the auto trans with the 4.30 diffs would be sweet

I'm aware of how modern engine work and specifically our Atkinson. I'm not disagreeing that for 95% of trails the CC will vastly out perform human input.

I'll back up the train a bit, and clairify. This is all for me personally and what I do. Long wheeling story short in VT on a slope where your bumper is over your roof steep, a 16" rock or so overturned and the computer ended up getting the wheel roll way too much and too far. Couldn it have been a vehicle / computer specific thing, sure. Not denying that. But it wasn't the only time that happened on the trip and the one that stuck out was in a very dangerous spot. Trucks sliding from moving rocks isn't uncommon. Sometimes it is what it is. To see it break loose like that left a bad taste in my mouth, personally.

    But I digress.

Had a 16 Trd Sport in MT. While it was fun, i found it more of a chore than anything. All my cars have been MT (3 WRXs) before the Taco. Maybe I’m just getting older (34). Waiting on delivery of a 19 Trd Pro Automatic :)

For sure. You have good points. And the odd time the computer is going to stove that F22 into a mountain as well...just if I were a betting man....my money is on the passionless computer.

Anyways......it’s just latent MT jealousy bubbling in me anyways. For the record, Crawl Control has absolutely saved my ass and my truck, and possibly my life on one occasion. If I was driving MT, I probably would not have put myself so far out on a limb to begin with.

I think the CC system is best demonstrated by this vid of a Landcruiser using it. Remembering that cameras always make steep shit look tame, you know it’s gnarly when it looks as steep as it does in the vid. No MT or AT guy could have made this ascent without some dangerous level of speed/momentum, and a deadly chance of a stall/roll-back. The shit is legit.

Am I the only one that doesn’t care for the Tacoma in a manual trans?

Just don’t like the way the clutch is in them. I’d perfer stick in smaller, sporty cars. I’ve literally driven a semi with a more comfortable set up. Just can’t get into it. Feels like a refined version of the 89 S10 I learned how to drive stick on :anonymous:

I think the one we had was a 4 cylinder. No smoke from the tires, maybe the clutch.

And it didn’t look as bad ass as that, was more like this:

Gonna leave my manual for the weekend sports/muscle car. Daily?? Auto all the way. Zero regrets, and when I buy another one, i’ll get another auto. I see zero reason in SoCal for a manual car for a DD unless you are trying to be “old school”. Too much traffic, just doesn’t make sense. If I was in a little more rural place?? Why not?

I love and seriously enjoy driving the MT everyday. It is very smooth, fun, 4.30 gears, consistently get 22's to 23's+ mpg in the summer, and did I say it is actually fun to drive.

Well, to be honest I never ever drove the AT, but would like to after all the bitching you read here.

I got the MT and if I had to do it over again, I’d get the same thing.

bought an auto because of my commute. 26 miles each way and spend 10 each way in stop and go. if not for the stop and go, would have gone manual.

Haha I had a 95 S10 regular cab short bed 4x2 with a 4.3 and a 5 speed... that was a tire roasting little pickup!

I drive 4 different vehicles regularly, all of them stick, and sometimes I get in the Tacoma and think "man, I sure am tired of clutching."

Then I use my truck to do ANYTHING and I remember why I got it in the first place! :D

Currently own my 17th and 18th 4wds (2011 Tacoma 2012 FJ Cruiser) spread over the years since 1973. I've owned 8 manuals, and 10 auto's. Last 5 have been auto's and you couldn't give me another manual. YMMV.
