I mean towing. If i have my truck and trailer loaded down. I will not be able to maintain 65 MPH easily. I understand im asking a lot from the 4 cylinder and im not complaining about it. But its something you cant exactly experience on a test drive. I have 197K miles on my 2.7 and its a great motor. no complaints from me as I push mine to its capacity.

My 12 4cyl auto is the slowest vehicle I've ever owned. I did pass a 5th gen 4Runner this morning. They were driving slow and I was just getting in the lane I needed to be in.

I you need more power just down shift to third that's all I do when I'm loaded down and it spins those 285s just fine! It loves to live in the high rpms 4-5k!

Yes I did back in March last year!

Only issue now is you gotta buy a 2016 or 2017 5 speed 4 cylinder since Toyota stopped making them for 2018. The 2018s are only 4 cylinder automatics.....

Are those E rated tires? If so, did you notice any power loss? I have 265/65-17 right now and want to go skinnier and taller but cant take anymore power loss.

Ive had my 2.7 for 3 years now. My only complaint is on long hiway trips (which are rare) when it cant hold 75mph on cruise without downshifting and staying there. Cruise sucks!

I’ve had my 2.7 since February and I have to floor it getting in the interstate, but it keeps up with traffic. Here’s a picture of what I towed with it last weekend. 7E8C4A76-7A39-4CDF-8472-A78BDCF69A7D.jpg

They are E load. I’m getting about 21 mpg. Roughly 400 miles per tank. Very little power loss noticed. Per Cooper they are 49 pounds each. The factory Firestone Destination LE2 were 38 pounds each.

As many have already said, in terms of reliability the 2.7 will never let you down. Speed is relative, but if you’re used to 300+ hp cars this will feel slower than cold molasses. I agree a manual Trans is highly recommended just to add some fun factor and life to the motor. It gets around town just fine, merging on the highway and passing I think is where I miss having some sack.. I just don’t pass unless I have A LOT of room and maintaining 75+ on the highway uphill is pretty much impossible without a downshift… It took me a while to get used to, but all in all I can’t complain, it does get up to speed okay as long as you don’t mind revving it up a bit. And I go 80-85 every day down the highway no issues (except hills).. It’s a great motor that will last forever and does have enough power for most things (depending on your needs). Just don’t expect it to be fast..

That was my thought process getting a Tacoma. Not I4 vs V6, but instead mid-size vs full-size truck. If I were planning to tow anything of significant weight, I'd not have bought a Tacoma, period. Good thing is, as already mentioned, Taco's hold their value so losses are minimized if you trade.

2.7 is a good engine, though. As long as the buyer recognizes its power and ability, it's a workhorse of an engine that will last a loooong time.

I own a second gen 4cyl, 5mt 4wd ac cab long bed, and a 3rd gen 6mt 4wd dcsb. Trucks are both set up the same, bumpers, winch, sliders, plus size tires, etc.
The way i drive, the 4 cylinder gets 1 mpg better than the 6 cylinder daily driving. In the winter or up in the mountains in 4wd, the 4 cylinder gets 2-3 mpg better than the 6 cylinder.

    I like my 6 cylinder.

I intended to only ever haul one or two motorcycles and the rest just daily drive with the Tacoma. I was about to sign on the dotted line for the 4 cylinder and realized the V6 was only about 2k more or about $20 more dollars per month so I opted for that mainly to add to the taco’s already good resale value. I don’t regret it, I think the way I drive to get from A to B I’d spool out the four cylinder more than the V6 and get close in mpg’s. Nice to have the torque on hand if it’s ever needed.

Perhaps the only thing that sucks more than cruise on a 2.7 is not having cruise on a 2.7! My '08 regular cab was very basic, no cruise control. On long trips on the slab, that purely sucked in a very big way.
