A stick's the only reason I looked at Tacomas in the first place, so that's not changing. :)

Not according to a lot of complaints in this forum. There’s a lot of people, as you know, wondering why an auto would make the decisions it makes, especially when going uphill. As far as off road... meh. A person could say that modern trans do what we do, except smoother and faster. I guess that’s nice for certain people. My manual trans does what I tell it to, and if it’s not as smooth and as fast as I like, I’ll just have to get smoother and faster.

No “gear hunting” with my MT. I know what gear I want to be in and make it so.
And yes, I would purchase a MT again.

I've driven a manual for 44 years and the Tacoma was my first vehicle that was an AT. (My family cars/vans have always been AT because my wife kills a clutch). I will always buy at AT from now on unless I buy a true sports car. The only con to a AT is the fun-factor. ATs are less maint over the course of time. (This excludes garbage ATs from Chrysler and Mazda). I think they are cheaper if you do more than 1 clutch job by a mechanic. They now get better mileage than MTs. There's less distractions for some people with ATs. You have to be damn good with an MT before you can beat the performance of a AT now days.

Not to go off on too much of a tangent but I have to decide if I can live with a CVT transmission for my wife's car. She wants another Honda CRV and I currently own the last year, 2013, that they came with a real AT. Yuck!

Some of us want to have fun when we drive our vehicles..

WRONG. AT = more moving parts, more can go wrong, MUCH higher rebuild cost. With a manual all you really have to do is change the clutch disc >$100.

Thats debatable. More than likely people who dont have to use their brains to shift are going to apply their brains elsewhere (Cellphone, eating, makeup, etc)

I didn’t notice if anyone mentioned this... But a manual is actually becoming a theft deterrent. Criminals apparently aren’t as swift with the manual tranny.

Although that is for a 4cyl, im sure there will be one available in less than a year for the V6. Only full kits (Clutch disc, Pressure plate and TOB) available that are only $300.

Either way, I prefer a $300 clutch kit over a $2000 auto trans rebuild.

As long as I can obtain and drive a manual I will be rowing my own gears.

Heck yea! Ive been working on cars for almost 20 years and I STILL cringe at the thought of cracking open an Auto trans.

    Manual for life.

I’ve never had to, and I wouldn’t. I just wouldn’t be into it.

Just not into the sorcery involved. Seems so pointless when it could simply be a gearbox.

That's fine and dandy, but that's not for everyone. And comparing the costs of parts to a full repair is dishonest. If you can diy, either one will be cheaper than taking it to a shop.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that preference at all.

Can't really argue other then the fact that SMGs have a high failure rate. I don't have real world experience driving a AT Tacoma (only MT), I can only go off video reviews(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jy1joyWcRCc). Can you provide some solid articles or factual evidence that the Auto's in the Tacoma are "dog shit"?

Again, there is nothing wrong with preferring a manual vs auto transmission. Get them while you can, cars will become fully autonomous in the near future. I just find it hard to argue facts over opinion.

They offered a dsg in the Taco I'd be telling all of ya to take a hike.
We will not be discussing repair costs on the dsg though...

It’s definitely not for everyone. I can’t see a manual trans costing more to repair than an automatic, in any case though. I’m sure it’s possible. Like if the case cracked on the manual, and on the inside of the automatic, just a simple pixie dust coated newts eye shit the bed, sure.

Fair enough. However, TIME = MONEY. Costs at a shop for manual transmission repair will almost always be cheaper than auto trans repair, being that it is much easier to do.

Maybe and even probably. And I get the reasoning behind getting a manual for cheaper repairs, but if you look in the third gen section, there are more mechanical failures repairs right now on the manual trans than the auto. The auto box seems pretty well built, just the software leaving something to be desired. There is a pretty popular manual transmission software update thread too though...
I don't think mechanical failure potential is much of a concern with either one, software though, ugh.

Neither one is really perfect Imo.
