I like this idea. I have a remote start from my fob that was a dealer option installed at my work by a dude in a van. I was disappointed that it didnt work from my phone like I had hoped it would. I have a few questions about this that I am going to ask when I have a chance to think about what they are  but for the moment, Im just very excited!

Why do that if you o lot need GPS for personal use? You can add a smart start module and even if you don’t use the app based engine start/stop door lock/unlock features and go with the stand alone feature, then only the GPS will be active which is what the OP is asking for. The subscription is free the first year and the $29.99 there after. There are also a lot of just GPS only modules that plug into the your BCM but the subscriptions for those is $69.99 per year at the minimum. LoJack costs $700 - $1000 for the module itself not to mention the yearly subscription fees because it’s like a home ADT system where police are dispatched, emergency services during a major accident (like onstar) and so on...unless that’s what you want too. You can have a PLUG n PLAY remote start using your OEM fob with a smart start add on module to use your phone anywhere in the world if you have Wi-Fi or cell signal for about $300 or less and with a $29.99 yearly and you can install it yourself. The LoJack requires a professional installer in most cases, so you’re looking at even more $$$ in labor. I don’t think I’d go with LoJack if all I wanted was GPS dude.

What? Lots of misinformation in your reply. LoJack is only a $695 one time payment for the lifetime monitoring service, and module. You pay $695 and it’s attributed to your car for life. No subscription fees or anything. I have one installed on my Honda Civic.

Personally I like the LoJack because it’s already linked to a reputable service that law enforcement can easily interface. If you have your own standalone module there’s so many factors that can affect the performance.

It’s also well hidden. A thief or a chop shop can easily unplug a OBDII module, or even a module you hide under the dash.

“The one-time cost for a LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System has an MSRP of $695.”

SPOT systems are great, but the subscription is $15/mo or $150/yr. my work paid for mine, I wouldnt.

    As for my truck, LoJack.

A bit off topic - now for personal use I have a small PLB (personal locator beacon) that is used to call for emergency use only. It cost $150, and there’s no subscription fee- it only relays your GPS position by satellite and a radio signal beacon for ground rescue tracking.

Not SO much misinformation man other than the subscription fees. The prices I mentioned are spot on as there are two LoJack options. I stand corrected on the subscription fees. Thanks for pointing that out, not my intention to mislead at all so i apologoze about that.

The one-time cost for a LoJack® Stolen Vehicle Recovery System has an MSRP of $695. A LoJack® System with Early Warning, which notifies you if your car is moved without your Key Pass present, has an MSRP of $995.

However, you pay double to triple for theft recovery essentially based on which one you chose...if you want the GPS tracked by law enforcement, great but if it’s for personal use, spend half that much and get the features I mention. How easy is it to take/transfer the LoJack with you to your next vehicle? The remote starts are pretty universal, they can be reflashed for your next vehicle yourself, or resold to someone else who can reflash it themselves with the respective vendors software! The only thing that changes is the plug n play T harness if you’re next vehicle is a different make/model or a much much later generation vehicle of the same make/model. In some cases the T harness is the same year over year on the same make/model until there is a completely different computer/pin out redesign.

At the end of the day, to each his own. I personally don’t think I get much out of a LoJack as PTS vehicles are almost impossible to steal unless they’re flatbeded. I’d rather enjoy doing things with my car via smart phone...and have GPS available naturally with it. For everything else, there’s always insurance! I personay wouldn’t want a stolen car recovered and insurance attempting to restore it...if it’s gone, it’s wuickly chopped. So if the LoJack does anything, it can help put those responsible behind bars, maybe? But that doesn’t bring my vehicle back the way I left it.
