Posted this in General Automotive but thought I’d get a quicker answer here....

My brother in-law leased a GMC truck in 2015 and was deployed over seas this year. While he was gone, the registration expired in January. The question is, it’s time to turn in his truck but does he need to get it registered(paying the late fee, obviously) before doing so? Or does that not matter

I don’t see why you would need to register it if you’re turning it in.

Given that he is on deployment, I would call and ask while noting the situation. I cannot imagine that they would do that for someone on deployment, esp when the registration has to flip anyway.

Been on deployments a few times also. Most insurance companies require insurance and current registration on leased/financed vehicles. How does he plan on getting the truck to the dealer with no current registration? Call the DMV and ask if he can get a 1-2 day temp registration just to drive the truck to the dealer.

Dealer is 5 miles away. He’s just gonna eat the $80ish for registration.

Does he plan on getting a new vehicle after the turn in from somewhere? Could just transfer it to the new vehicle.

They started this whole new "weight fee" law. I feel offended, it's all muscle weight. :pout:

$623 for my new 2018 in AZ, at least we have super low property tax. In fact my property tax on our condo is not much more than my 1st year truck registration. :bananadead:

Our property tax offsites my wife's self-employent income tax here in CA during tax season so it balances itself a bit.

self-employment taxes suck the root big time in CA, man....the City of LA just started a new tax on the self-employed that goes back to 2011 and I just got an "estimated tax owed" bill in the mail for it last month, shit sucks. So glad I started working full time a few years ago...sometimes I resent having the same 9-5 everyday but then I just remember how badly CA likes bend over the self-employed and it makes it suck less.

I still freelance on the side so I still have to deal with it every year, but not as bad as I once did.

Yea, if it wasnt for half of her income going to someone else's day at the golf course, she would be making alot more than even me, and I think I do pretty ok-ish.

The drive isn’t the issue. Getting hit with a $400 dealer fee, is. According to the leasehakr thread posted earlier, a similar instance in Ohio(where the truck is) resulted in a fairly substantial fee.

hey man been deployed a couple time with the Army, google laws from where you're from and find out about deployment while in a lease..theirs a law regarding Soldiers and Sailors Act can't remember the exact year ... also if you can get on post find his unit and go talk to them if he isn't there and talk with JAG..you'll need an appointment in most cases...
