Doubt it's a shell, I have the same thing, and I can only imagine it comes from the bed hitting it when the frame flex's.

Thanks, it’s about half the price of oem. I’ll probably end up going that route. Going to do the wheel test first just to make sure they really need replacing.

    Hmm couldn’t find those ones

Ah gotcha. Though I have the same too and it was because of the drop in liner. Maybe it's the drop in liner.

Maybe, I dunno. There’s a rubber mat in the bed now.

Be aware that the wheel test is by no means definitive. If it indicates they are bad, they are REALLY bad.

I have the same marks around the bed top. The truck has been owned by my neighbor for the last 17 years, never had a cap on it. Did have a dropin bedliner, though. Had. ;)

Damage like that equals more than likely the truck has been hit in the ass end hard. I saw this all the time when looking at rebuilders. The truck gets rear ended hard enough that the bed smacks the back of the cab denting it. The frame springs back so in some cases people don't even notice that their truck is gooched outside some bumper damage.

I'd be hard pressed to find how a shell dented in the cab in this area. That's not just paint chipping that's a dent that extends all the way to the seam under the glass

Maybe it slide forward when they were taking it off.

The frame on the truck is perfect, clean title, bumpers clean (I know it could have been replaced but I don’t think so).

There’s rub makes along all the bed rails of the truck that in my experience would line up with a shell.

Not worried about it either way, just worried about the paint.

It'd take more than sliding the shell forward, I've done exactly that without any damage. In everyone else's (that have chimed in so far) experience those marks along the rails are from a drop in liner. I'd bet real money (if I had any ) that the truck was rear ended at some point, it's the only thing I've seen cause that kind of damage.

Guess if that’s the only damage it doesn’t matter then huh.

Like @Itchyfeet said, the frame probably sprang back into shape, I'd bet the bumper was replaced, may not even have affected the tailgate. Not a huge deal imo
