I ordered mine just the way I wanted it. 17 SR 2.7 utility package 4x4 AC 5 spd. honestly if the 5 spd was not available I would not have bought a Tacoma. That said, I could not be happier with my purchase after about 25k miles.
Just some observations: Those that have had a 2.7 in the past and then got a 3.5 don't usually have anything bad to say about the 2.7.
Those that have the 2.7 with a manual seem to be very happy.
Most of the 3.5 owners that bag on the 2.7 do a bit of heavy towing which would exclude the 2.7 in the first place.
Nearly all the drive train complaints involve the 3.5 and the auto trans (not really valuable info because that combo is the most common).

    Many mods to come.
There was a thread a while back about how the current 4 cylinder 2trfe In the 3rd gens is the most powerful 4 banger Toyota has ever put in a Tacoma and I agree with it. I’ve owned my 2017 2.7L SR5 for about a year and have no regrets and the 24+ mpg just makes me even more happy about my purchase. However there are advantages to the v6 but I guarantee u will not get anywhere near 24 mpg even on the best days with it, as confirmed by a friend of mine who has a v6 trd off-road

They don't make the 2.7 in a manual anymore? I have no idea why Toyota has all these weird options now. Can't get a V6 TRD OR LB with a M/T either...

My 1st gen was a 2.7 and it was badass. I had 3 dirt bikes in the back all the time at high elevations without any issues. I mean you have to get used to keeping the RPM's high is all.

That said, I would not go back to a 2.7 on a truck after having the 3.5L. And for all of those that say the V6 doesn't have power, lol.... It is the same thing, you just need to keep the RPMs high and it has more power than you would think. A lot of torque!

If my 2nd gen would have been 4wd I'd still have it. Drove it 11 years then sold it to a buddy's dad and he loves it.

I think the 2.7 5MT was discontinued due to difficulties making the combo work with the TSS.

If I don't have power, it's my fault for being in the wrong gear. My 2.7 will happily accelerate to highway speeds uphill, so long as I don't try to put it in overdrive.

Happy with the 4banger, when I think of a mid size truck, its a 4 banger and a manual of coarse. Going on 9k, and its been good!

I just feel like the 2.7 is the more reliable engine. In the 2years of owning it and 40k miles later the 2.7 has not given me one problem or weird noises, nothing at all. Same engine thats in the 1st and 2nd gen also so you know its reliable. I also like its made in Japan still. OV tune is also releasing a tune for the 2.7 soon.

I agreed 100% on that! had a 1st gen auto for 10 years over 200K Miles slow poke. Next 08 2nd gen with 5 manual for almost 10 years. was a bit better. now have another 2nd gen 6 cylinder 5 auto it’s well worth the $ the extra 100 plus horse power feels like a sports car to me! LoL!

Unfortunately. I'll try and enjoy mine while it lasts.

But yeah back on topic. 4 cyl why not OP? You can really do alot with them. I just wish I could have found a manual in my configuration.

    At this point clueless...
The question I have in reference to the 4 cylinder vs the 6 cylinder. Can someone tell me how many miles one has achieved from either of the two before the motor went south and a new one was needed?

The 2.7L is proven. The emissions designed head on the v6 isn't. (head is new, block is proven) You can have a gut feel, but obviously you can't know with certainty if the v6 will go the distance, but you do know it's going to be high maintenance and cost to see it through to 150k miles.

Really depends on what you want from the truck. If you have to tow alot, or your gonna flip it in a few years, go with the v6. If you want to keep it for 15 years with minimal cost, then the 2.7L.

I've owned 4 Tacoma's and 3 pre Tacoma's since 1985 and all have been 4cyl except the 17 I have now (SR 4x4 4door with V6 6speed auto. Been looking for a SR 4cyl 4x4 5speed for 6mo to trade for with no luck . Yes the V6 has more power, but it's up high in the rpm range, just can't get use to it after 35,000 miles.
So looking at a new SR5 4cyl 6speed auto 4x4. My question is how do folks like that combo with 430 rearend

I bought the V6... I would get a V8, if it was an option!

My neighbor has a stock 4-cylinder Tacoma and likes it, but he only drives local roads.
