Beware changing LSD lube!!!!!!!!!!

That will vary from dealer to dealer. My local dealer told me it'd cost $40 for the LSD rear oil change including labor (conventional oils & FM). My other dealer quoted me $60 for the same service (synthetic & FM).

Try calling a different dealer and see what you get.

After the change - I was getting grumbles during the first few turns after the truck sat overnight. That was it. The rest of the day it was fine. It eventually came down to only grumbling at the first LEFT turn. And now, it seems even that first left turn grumbles are fading away. I can hear it, but just barely. I roll down the windows & turn the radio off to listen...

I'm hoping it was just a matter of time for things to work themselves in....

 

I am at almost 2K mark with Delvac and GM additive, so far no issues. I think once out of blue moon I get faint rumble but my engine tends to give the same amount of vibe so not clear on that. Otherwise its all good (to the point that I almost forgot i supposed to listen )

 

So, mine is still grumbling slightly in the left turns. I sent an e-mail to the Toyota dealership whom I respect (and bought the truck from). I honestly wasn't expecting an answer. I specifically explained about my situation, the oils I used, and the fact that I called them for suggestions on the modifier along with - 'the manual isn't clear enough' about what needs to be used, etc. I gave him my VIN number also.

Another reason I did this - was to get some 'documentation'. If my rear diff has a problem in the future, I have a better chance at fighting it IF they won't cover it under warrantee.

So, for what its worth.....this is from the Service Manager (Carl Crone) at New Holland Toyota:

JANDY, MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT WE USE A 75W- 90 FLUID ALONG WITH A AFTERMARKET ADDITIVE OR FORD ADDITIVE ,WE HAVE HAD TO ADD 2 BOTTLES OF ADDITIVE AT TIMES TO CORRECT A SHUDDER SO I WOULD TRY THAT AT THIS POINT. IM NOT SURE IF THE MOBILE 1 IS A PROBLEM , I DON’T THINK SO BUT I WOULD ADD ANOTHER BOTTLE BEFORE CHANGING THE FLUID. LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT . THANKS CARL SVC. MNGR.

So, I'm off to the Ford Dealership to get another bottle of XL3. It's a no wonder Toyota got rid of the mechanical LSD's in these trucks. It shouldn't be this difficult to change the oil. AGain, this is the reason why I respect this dealership. They actually respond and give me 'believable' information in return.

 

Amsoil as well 75W90 with their additive in the Taco, the Mustang and the Charger SRT8, never had any issue's.

 

I've used Amsoil Severe Gear (no extra additive) in our Corvette w/ LSD without any issues.

It's a crap shoot...... Did you use Severe Gear? That's already got additives in it.

I wanted to get Amsoil, but I wasn't about to pay another $20 just to renew my membership.

 

I used the 75W90 Severe Gear with the small bottle of Amsoil Slip Lock. I've used this combo on the Mustang right after changing the rear gearing to 3.73, on the Charger and on the Tacoma. Alot of the guys on the Mustang forums stated that if you're changing the fluid to go ahead and add the Slip Lock. So far I haven't had any problems. Charger has 20k miles since the change, Mustang 10k and the Tacoma 40k.

 

Just put in the Amsoil last night witht the Amsoil slip lock...so far so good! No chatter for the first 50 miles! I'll be changing it out in say...75k miles

 

Man i wish i woulda read the forums before changing my Rear Differential.

After changing the original gear oil out and putting in Mobil1 75-90 Sythetic i got a vibrating noise when accelerating from stopping points. Jumped on the forums and walla, found out that the Tacomas dont like synthetic gear oil in the REARs.

Went down and bought the Lucas 80-90 and a Friction modifier from Autozone and noise is gone.

My front and transfer were still looking new so i didn't worry about changing those at the moment, but i did read that the synthetic has no problems in the front or transfer.

Gotta love the forums.

So I am at 2500 mile mark with Delvac and two GM bottles of additive.
LSD diff quiet and smooth.

Update: Everything is smooth with the Amsoil.

 

Seems like the consensus is....to use a double dose of friction modifiers.
If the oil you use already has friction modifiers in it, then adding another bottle of a friction modifier seems to be the trick.

I did my change 2,000 miles ago with MObile 1 and XL3. I added a 2nd bottle of XL3 about 1,000 miles ago and everything has been fine since.
