I went with this specific frame after reading an article. A few guys had done it and loved it. The article had a break down of measurements and everything so I went with what they all used. 2.8’s are fine with these wheels and are the limit for the rear of the frame as far as clearance.

For those transporting thru-axle bikes on crossbars, what mounts are you using?

I went with Yakima Forkchops as they allow my Diamondback cover to be opened when bikes are off. A tray mount prevents opening the cover. However, mounting a thru-axle bike seems more of a pain compared to a standard QR.

Is there a lot of good biking in and around the Tampa area? Sweet bikes by the way! I wish I could get my wife to bike that aggressive with me

Do you have some experience at least? Pisgah is gnar and you will need to be pretty fit for that many miles in the saddle

    That looks totally badass though!

There’s a lot of good biking in the area, just not a ton of elevation which is fine...we’re newbies. Got a great deal on these at 25% off since they’re 2018 models. Hadn’t planned to spend that much.

We lived in New Port Richey until last August, now we’re 20 minutes south.

Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey has about 15 miles of trails.

Awesome setup. Any tips for getting the gf to progress her riding to keep up?
It was crazy fun. Trails were much better than I expected. I initially thought we were just driving up the grass and having lunch on the mountain but was pleasantly surprised. Btw, bike rack was a bad idea for those trails lol

I was going to ask. "Did you get the 2019 SB5?" (Fox 36, 2.6 Tires and a new rear capable of 2.8.) , but a close look answers that question because I see a Fox 34. Regardless that's a sweet new set of rides you got there. Have so much fun :)

I wish there was a method I could tell you to follow. I think that you can't force it but if there is a desire to ride there is always a desire to progress. We took my girlfriend (now wife) to Moab for a week of riding and her skills progressed fast. She started out on an inexpensive Cannondale that she had before I meet her. After riding a few trails with me she upgraded to a full suspension Cannondale and now she is on the idea of getting a new bike every 3 years(At the moment she is on a Scott Spark, she actually beat me to the carbon world) and plans week long desert trips once or twice a year.

Buying her a Yeti Beti might help too.

Nice! A huge influence for my fiance riding more often (when not in grad school) has been the influence of other women. If other women are enjoying it then she wants to enjoy it. Because riding with me "isn't fun" because I "ride too fast."

My girlfriend is onto year three of bikes now and now bike #3. I have a Yeti SB5.5 and she is on a Transition Smuggler (115mm travel 29) which I thought would be an awesome bike for her since she rides really timidly and didn't need the big travel. I let her try my bike for a day to see if a burlier bike would help with her confidence and she was immediately riding things she would normally walk around. So now her new SB5.5 should be arriving next week....

Does she need an high end carbon super-bike? Absolutely not. But if it makes riding more enjoyable for the both of us then I'm on board.

My wife introduced ME to mountain biking 30 years ago ... I struggled on our first trail date but she kept me anyway. I’m a lot better now, maybe a bit more confident than her on some steep loose downhills but in general she’s a faster, more capable and fitter rider than me. We’re lucky here to have a huge women’s riding community, with formal group rides (no men) divided into small groups by skill as well as lots of women to ride with almost every day. And I’m rarely invited on the latter, as she points out that she’s usually the only woman who joins my Sunday morning group. By the way we both have carbon FS bikes but hers is nicer.

Went on a 12.5 mile ride this morning, got home and fashioned up this mount. I’ve been looking at carriers and racks and I just can’t bring myself to pay a bunch of money for one at the moment. Stopped by the hardware store and within 20 minutes of getting home I had my home brew mount.... $30 and a little sweat, can’t beat it.
